The problem of elderly care in Sri Lanka is not solely related to economic issues. The institution of the family which considered elderly care one of its major responsibilities is no longer capable of fullfilling this obligationto the same level as before due to the change of the family structure, family size and the division of labour between men and women that leaves less time and space for elderly care. The cultural stigma attached to the elderly homes labels them charity organisations and prevents many people from seeking support of such institutions, while also making the elderly feel neglected when institutionalised. No systems have been developed for elderly care that would be acceptable for both the elderly and their family members other than public and private institutions.Even though both men and women are affected by this situation, due to the gender differences prevailing in the country, men and women are disadvantaged in different ways. More men than women have been engaged in pensionable employment, allowing them to receive a reasonable pension after their retirement and to be economically less dependent. However, due to the gender division of labour prevailing in the society, they have beeen used to a lifestyle which makes them highly dependent in their day-to-day activities on the women in the family, while they are maintaining the powerful and commanding position in the family and in society which makes it more difficult for them to cope with the complexities of old age. However, unless they become physically disabled, women tend to be not only independent but also feature as a major support for the family in various ways to maintain their roles and responsibilities in the household which help them adjust more easily to life in dependent positions. Hence, in spite of their economic dependency, older women may be seen as less of a burden compared to older men, even if women tend to outlive men in Sri Lanka. Nevertheless, older men, especially after the death of a spouse, become more vulnerable to situations of helpessness, despair, loneliness and loss of power, despite their economic ability. This paper argues that elderly care in Sri Lanka has to take the changing population characteristics as well as gender and cultural situations into consideration, so as to provide a better living environment for senior citizens in the country who have spent their younger life periods making the country a better place for those who succeded them"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Na Šrilanki trenutno zelo narašča število starega prebivalstva, kar je velik problem za sisteme socialnega varstva v državi. Stari na Šrilanki v nasprotju s številnimi razvitimi državami v glavnem ne živijo od pokojninskih shem, ki bi jim omogočale večjo ekonomsko neodvisnost, niti jim niso zagotovljene sheme socialnega varstva.Problem skrbi za stare na Šrilanki ni povezan zgolj z ekonomskimi vprašanji.Institucija družine, ki je imela skrb za stare za eno svojih največjih odgovornosti, zaradi sprememb v družinski strukturi, velikosti družine in delitve dela med moškimi in ženskami ne more več izpoljnjevati te obveznosti enako kot prej. Zaradi kulturne stigme so domovi za stare pojmovani kot dobrodelne organizacije in številni ne iščejo pomoči v njih, stari ljudje pa se počutijo zanemarjene, če so institucionalizirani. Razen javnih in zasebnih domov za stare v državi nimamo razvitih sistemov skrbi za stare, ki bi bili sprejemljivi tako za stare kot za druge družinske člane. Čeprav take razmere prizadenejo moške in ženske, so zaradi razlik v spolnih vlogah moški in ženske različno depriviligirani. Ker je vse več moških zaposlenih v službah, ki jim zagotavljajo pokojnine, lahko po upokojitvi prejemajo primerne pokojnine in so ekonomsko manj odvisni. Vendar so zaradi spolne delitve dela, ki prevladuje v naši družbi, po eni strani vajeni življenjskega sloga, zaradi katerega so v svojih vsakdanjih dejavnostih zelo odvisni od žensk v družini, na drugi strani pa zato , ker so moški, ohranjajo pozicijo moči in obvladovanja v družini in družbi, zaradi česar se težje spoprijemajo s težavami starosti. Ženske pa niso le neodvisne, razen če postanejo fizično hendikepirane, temveč so tudi največji vir podpore v družini na različne načine, zato nenehno ohranjajo svoje vloge in odgovornosti v gospodinjstvu, kar jim pomaga, da se lažje privadijo na življenje v odvisnem položaju. Zato so kljub svoji ekonomski odvisnosti ženskev starosti manj v breme drugim kot moški, čeprav živijo dlje. Kljub svoji ekonomski zmogljivosti stari moški zlasti po smrti partnerice v starosti postanejo bolj ranljivi za situacije nemoči, obupa ali izgube moči.Pri skrbi za boljše življenjsko okolje starih ljudi na Šrilanki moramo upoštevati spreminjajoče se značilnosti prebivalstva pa tudi spola in kulturnih razmer"}],"edm:type":"TEXT","dc:type":[{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"znanstveno časopisje"},{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"journals"},{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785"}]},"ore:Aggregation":{"@rdf:about":"http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-EYM6PO3P","edm:aggregatedCHO":{"@rdf:resource":"URN:NBN:SI:doc-EYM6PO3P"},"edm:isShownBy":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EYM6PO3P/ab4e8b8b-ebbe-443d-b1c1-fee6a67c43dc/PDF"},"edm:rights":{"@rdf:resource":"http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"},"edm:provider":"Slovenian National E-content Aggregator","edm:intermediateProvider":{"@xml:lang":"en","#text":"National and University Library of Slovenia"},"edm:dataProvider":{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Univerza v Ljubljani, Fakulteta za socialno delo"},"edm:object":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EYM6PO3P/maxi/edm"},"edm:isShownAt":{"@rdf:resource":"http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EYM6PO3P"}}}}
