Sinhrotronsko sevanje je postalo eno izmed glavnih orodij v biokemiji za strukturne študije proteinov; je nujno potrebno za razvoj \"high-throughput\" kristalografije, ki bo omogočila avtomatizirano reševanje novih struktur množice proteinov, ko so rezultat hitrega razvoja področja genomike (določevanja zaporedja genov dednega zapisa) in proteomike (določevanja struktur proteinov, ki jih ti geni zapisujejo).
