Zaradi velike pokrajinske občutljivosti velikih mest in prekomernega obremenjevanja so bile tudi v 90. letih v večini regionalnih središč posamezne mestne sestavine prekomerno ali kritično onesnažene, kar zlasti velja za tekoče vode.
