Regardless of the newly accredited study programme and policies that promote the role of a midwife in the field of pre-, intra- and post- parturn care, Slovenian midwives do not perform all the activities assigned to by EU directives. The purpose of the study was to investigate the scope of midwifery practice in Slovenia; employment strategies and staff policies for the next five years. Methods: Twoquestionnaires were used; one to investigate employment of the graduates ofthe midwifery programme (those who graduated between 2000 and 2008) and the other to investigate employment strategies and staff policies for midwives in health institutions in Slovenia (68 public health centres and 14 maternity hospitals). Results: 108 (51 %) midwives with a bachelor degree participated in the first part of the study. All of them were females. 78 % of respondents work in the field ofmidwifery (40 % in the delivery room). In the second part of the study 43 (63 %) chief nurses of public health centres and 13 (93 %) chief nurses of maternity hospitals returned the questionnaires. All maternityhospitals employ midwives, most ofthem (85 %) plan to employ them also in the future. In public health centres the percentage of midwi ves is lower (30 %) and more than half of these institutions (57%) will not employ midwives in the next 5 years. Discussion and conclusions: Results of the studyshow that Slovenia does not fully comply with the EU directives (2005/36ES) on the recognition of professional qualifications and the gudelines thereof in the field of midwifery practice and staff policies Midwives are rarely employed at the primary health care leveđ and also in maternity hospitals outside delivery rooms</dc:description><edm:type>TEXT</edm:type><dc:type xml:lang="sl">znanstveno časopisje</dc:type><dc:type xml:lang="en">journals</dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785" /></edm:ProvidedCHO><ore:Aggregation rdf:about="http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-EBGPTVW4"><edm:aggregatedCHO rdf:resource="URN:NBN:SI:doc-EBGPTVW4" /><edm:isShownBy rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EBGPTVW4/5b2ceb54-c709-4dd5-8d81-b35cdb107b99/PDF" /><edm:rights rdf:resource="http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/" /><edm:provider>Slovenian National E-content Aggregator</edm:provider><edm:intermediateProvider xml:lang="en">National and University Library of Slovenia</edm:intermediateProvider><edm:dataProvider xml:lang="sl">Zbornica zdravstvene in babiške nege Slovenije - Zveza strokovnih društev medicinskih sester, babic in zdravstvenih tehnikov Slovenije</edm:dataProvider><edm:object rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EBGPTVW4/maxi/edm" /><edm:isShownAt rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-EBGPTVW4" /></ore:Aggregation></rdf:RDF>
