The potential for contrail formation is presented, along with the coverage of contrails due to air traffic, the influence of flight elevation, and the influence of aircraft propulsive efficiency. V prvem delu članka je opisana zgodovina raziskovanja kondenzacijskih sledi in različne teorije za njihovo nastajanje, v nadaljevanju pa je podrobneje predstavljena Schmidt/Appleman teorija. V drugem delu članka so predstavljeni vplivi kondenzacijskih sledi na ozračje in vplivi različnih pogojev na nastanek kondenzacijskih sledi. Predstavljen je potencial za nastanek kondenzacijskih sledi, prekritost s kondenzacijskimi sledmi zaradi letalskega prometa, vpliv višine leta in vpliv pogonskega izkoristka letala.
