Severe forms of the disease can have a diverse clinical presentation. The respiratory tract is affected most commonly, where COVID-19 can present with pneumonia or acute respiratory distress syndrome, followed by complications of the cardiovascular, coagulation and nervous system, or the kidneys. The so called silent hypoxemia also poses a special danger. Patients with the most severe forms of COVID-19 are admitted to the intensive care unit, where they receive mostly supportive therapy. The need for a more reliable prognosis of the course of the disease and, especially, for an effective causative treatment still remains.
