Currently, the use of MMCs is limited predominantly on the military and the aerospace industry. However, the penetration of these materials has already begun also in civilian applications. There are several ways of manufacturing of discontinuously reinforced (DR) Al/Sic MMCs: direct incorporation of the reinforcement (SiC particles, platelets or whiskers) into the molten Al alloy,infiltration of SiC preforms with molten Al alloy or via powder metalurgy (PM) procedures. The most promising and probably the cheapest industrial manufacturing procedure of DR Al/SiC MMCs is a direct incorporation of SiC particles into the molten Al alloy during direct vertical continuous (D.C.) casting of billets/ingots. The procedure is already developed on the industrial scale, however, the use, as well as properties of cast composite mportant for further forming to near net shape product (for example with pressure die casting or by hot extrusion) are still rather unknown. Therefore, Duralcan´s D.C. cast composite F3S.20S (Al-9% Si alloy with 20 vol. % of SiC particles) was purchased and analysed. In this article, microstructural and mechanical characteristics of cast composite are present and discussed</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Kontinuirno in diskontinuirno ojačani kompoziti Al/SiC so sodobni mateariali katerih bodočnost je nesporna zaradi mnogih dobrih lastnosti, kot so: visoka trdota in trdnost, dobra odpornost proti obrabi, uporabnost pri povišanih temperaturah, velik medul elastičnosti in majhna gostota. Sedaj je njihova uporaba omejena predvsem na letalsko industrijo in vojaške tehnologije. Vendar pa so ti materiali že začeli prodirati tudi na druga, tržno zanimiva področja. Izdelava diskontinuirano ojačanih kompozitov Al/SiC je možna na več načinov: z vmešavanjem relativno grobih delcev ojačitvene faze (SiC) v raztaljeno talino Al-zlitine, z infiltracijo keramičnih preoblikovancev in s postopki metalurgije prahov (PM). Eden od najobetavnejših postopkov izdelave kompozitov Al/SiC je vmešavanje delcev SiC med kontinuiranim vertikalnim litjem blokov iz Al zlitin. Postopek se že uporablja na polindustrijskem nivoju, vendar pa je uporabnost litega kompozita v nadaljnem postopku predelave (bodisi litja ali vroče predelave) še precej neznana. Zato smo pri ameriškem podjetju Duralcan nabavili livarski kompozit z oznako F3S.20S, ki v kovinski osnovi (zlitini Al z 9% Si) vsebuje 20 vol. % delcev SiC. V prvi fazi našega razvojno raziskovalnega dela smo mikrostrukturo in mehansko karakterizirali kompozit, iz katerega bomo z litjem in toplim iztiskovanjem (ekstruzijo) izdelali preizkušance primernih oblik za nadaljne preiskave, ki nam bodo omogočile spoznati uporabnost in lastnosti te vrste kompozitov.
