With the gradual opening of the border between Italy and Yugoslavia after 1955, shopping trips to Italy became regular social events and cultural phenomena. The article analyzes the formal properties of the cultural and communicative practices of "going shopping to Trieste" and draws on personal memories of former shoppers. It explores social experiences of a culture of shortages, the symbolic value and public meaning of goods, the system of interaction between border officials and shoppers/smugglers, gender divisions, and ethnic and class differentiation involved in shopping expeditions. The article treats everyday life as a critical arena for the communicative construction, reproduction and transformation of power, and elaborates on resistance strategies as a metaphor for power relations and surveillance at the level of everyday life in socialism</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Med ključnimi osebnimi spomini na socializem je spomin na kulturo pomanjkanja,na nezadovoljeno hrepenenje po želenem in nedostopnem blagu, torej na "diktaturo nad potrebami". Članek obravnava vsakdan kot ključni prostor reprodukcije moči in analizira strategije upora kot metafore za odnose moči in nadzorovanja vsakdana v socializmu</dc:description><edm:type>TEXT</edm:type><dc:type xml:lang="sl">znanstveno časopisje</dc:type><dc:type xml:lang="en">journals</dc:type><dc:type rdf:resource="http://www.wikidata.org/entity/Q361785" /></edm:ProvidedCHO><ore:Aggregation rdf:about="http://www.dlib.si/?URN=URN:NBN:SI:doc-B7MP9IVC"><edm:aggregatedCHO rdf:resource="URN:NBN:SI:doc-B7MP9IVC" /><edm:isShownBy rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/stream/URN:NBN:SI:doc-B7MP9IVC/16cceabb-51bb-4ec3-9e61-b4f708dbd01d/PDF" /><edm:rights rdf:resource="http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/" /><edm:provider>Slovenian National E-content Aggregator</edm:provider><edm:intermediateProvider xml:lang="en">National and University Library of Slovenia</edm:intermediateProvider><edm:dataProvider xml:lang="sl">Evropski inštitut za komuniciranje in kulturo - EURICOM</edm:dataProvider><edm:object rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/streamdb/URN:NBN:SI:doc-B7MP9IVC/maxi/edm" /><edm:isShownAt rdf:resource="http://www.dlib.si/details/URN:NBN:SI:doc-B7MP9IVC" /></ore:Aggregation></rdf:RDF>
