As nursing is an evolving professional discipline, nurses should committo continuous life-long learning and undertake research work. Methods: Acomprehensive literature review was conducted using the union bibliographic/catalogue database COBIB.SI, and the Cumulative Index to Nursingand Allied Health Literature (CINAHL). The following key words were used in the Slovene and English language: raziskovanje, 2dravstvena nega; nursing research, professional development. Results: On the basis of a quantitative review of 34 papers by Sloveuc authors three content categories were identified: 1 -basic information on the research needs, explanation of methods, 2 - significance of nursing research, assessment of the merit of previous studies and some reasons for the present state of research endeavours, 3 -justification of further research supported by nursing practice. More than a half of the hits retrieved belong to the second category. On the basis of a quantitative review of 36 papers by foreign authors from CINAHL base three content categories were identified: 1 - conditions for the development of research and research benefits, 2 - researchin clinical environment, 3 -basic principles of research and the application of research outcomes into practice. 80% of the hits retrieved belong to the first and the second category. Discussion and conclusions: Slovenian authors, on the one hand, concentrate mostly on the importance of nursing research and its development. They emphasise the necessary competence of research strategies and methods and the nurses' awareness of its significance.
