Its positive effects on the high-intensity exercise capacity and increase in lean muscle mass are well supported in the literature, which makes it very attractive for the athletes. Since decrease in muscle mass is a common issue of the ageing population, the use of creatine could also be attractive for the them. Effects of creatine that are the most relevant for the elderly are increased muscle mass, increased anaerobic threshold, enhanced recovery, increased exercise capacity and increased activation of osteoblasts. Supplementation of creatine may have positive effect also on the population with chronic diseases as are some neurodegenerative diseases, type II diabetes and patients at risk for myocardial ischemia and/or stroke. In the paper, the effects of creatine that are relevant for the ageing population and the guidelines for its use are presented</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Kreatin sodi med enega izmed najbolj raziskanih in učinkovitih ergogenih prehranskih dopolnil. Njegovi učinki na kapaciteto za visokointenzivno vadbo in prirastek puste mišične mase so dobro raziskani in dokazani, zaradi česar se ga pogosto poslužujejo športniki. Glede na to, da je upad mišične mase ena izmed sprememb, ki spremlja proces staranja, je prehranska podpora z dodajanjem kreatina aktualna tudi za starostnike. Poleg vpliva na povečanje mišične mase in odziva na trening moči so potencialni učinki, relevantni za to populacijo, tudi zvišan anaerobni prag, povečanje aerobne kapacitete, povečanje delovne kapacitete, pospešeno okrevanje, večja zmožnost za vadbo in povečanje osteoblastne aktivnosti. Uživanje kreatina ima lahko potencialne pozitivne učinke tudi pri starostnikih, ki trpijo za kroničnimi boleznimi, kot so nevrodegenerativna obolenja, diabetes tipa II ali pri ljudeh s povečanim tveganjem za miokardno ishemijo ali kap.
