These determine the functions that must be implemented in an index in order to give the information seeker an effective means for searching information inside a document. This functionality relies upon the structure and arrangement of index and is also affected by the quality of translation of contents into headings. The structure elements with their scope and the most common alphabetical arrangement are described thoroughly. Since time for index building is limited, the indexer should comply with guidelines that enable quick acquaintance with document contents and translation into headings. The indexer must also pay attention to selection and specificity of headings and depth of indexingStvarna kazala so definirana v mednarodnih standardih, med katerimi sta ISO 999 in ANSI Z39.4. Iz definicij izhajajo funkcije, ki jih mora stvarno kazalo izpolnjevati, da iskalcu informacij omogoča učinkovito iskanje znotraj dokumenta. Funkcionalnost je pogojena z uporabljenimi strukturnimi elementi in ureditvijo kazala, nanjo pa vpliva tudi kvaliteta prevajanja vsebine dokumenta v gesla. Podrobno so opisani strukturni elementi stvarnega kazala in njihov namen, ter abecedna ureditev, ki je v stvarnih kazalih najpogostejša. Ker je čas za izdelavo kazala omejen, mora oblikovalec kazala slediti smernicam, ki omogočajo hitro spoznavanje z vsebino dokumenta in prevajanje vsebine v gesla.
