Generally utilized polymers for this purpose are categorized as natural (xanthan), synthetic (poly- ethylene oxide) and semi-synthetic (hydroxypropyl- methylcellulose). Understanding of their physico- chemical characteristics and variability such as molecular weight, viscosity, type of substitute and degree of substitution, critical polymer concentration as well as size and shape of polymer chain are es- sential for formulation of robust tablets with desired release kinetics. In this review, the most important physico-chemical properties for formulation of ma- trix tablets are elaborated at examples of hydrox- ypropylmethylcellulose, polyethylene oxide and xan- than</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Osnovni gradniki hidrofilnih ogrodnih tablet so poli- meri, ki ob stiku z vodo (medijem) nabrekajo in tvorijo gel ter s tem nadzirajo sproščanje zdravilne učinkovine oziroma njeno biološko uporabnost. V ta namen v večini primerov uporabljamo naravne (ksantan), sintezne (polietilenoksid) in polsintezne polimere (hidroksipropilmetilcelulozo). Poznavanje fizikalno-kemijskih lastnosti polimerov in njihove va- riabilnosti, kot so porazdelitev molske mase (stopnja polimerizacije), viskoznost, vrsta substituenta in stopnja substitucije, kritična koncentracija polimera ter oblika in velikost polimerne verige, so ključni za načrtovanje robustnih sistemov z želeno kinetiko sproščanja.
