Vzroki takšnega sociološkega zanemarjanja so moralni, intelektualni in osebni. Čustva predstavljajo tisto dimenzijo subjektivitete, ki je pritegnila najmanj pozornosti družbenih teoretikov. Toda v zadnjih dveh desetletjih narašča interes za proučevanje človeških čustev. Članek nakazuje nekaj smeri proučevanja. Osnovna ideja je, da so čustva neločljiva od družbenega in kulturnega konteksta, v okviru katerega jih ljudje doživljajo. Razumeti jih moramo kot družbene pojave, ne pa kot biološko dejstvo.
