In numerous cases, the treatment according to the current guidelines does not lead to the desired outcome, and consequently, new approaches and medicines are under development. In this review article, different possible approaches are presented, which are (I) reduction of pathogen bacteria and establishment of a nor- mal oral flora, (II) host modulation therapy, and (III) improvement of tissue regeneration mostly with nanomedicines, such as liposomes, nanopar ticles, and nanofibers loaded with a drug. Nanomedicines can enable prolonged retention and controlled drug release at the targeted site; moreover, nanofibers can also increase periodontal disease regeneration</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Parodontalna bolezen je kronično vnetje obzobnih tkiv, ki vodi k razgradnji pozobnice, cementa in kosti zobiščnega odrastka, nastanku obzobnih žepov in izgubi zob. Trenutne smernice zdravljenja pogosto ne vodijo k želenim rezultatom, zato so aktualne raziskave novih terapevtskih pristopov in zdravil. V prispevku predstavljamo različne možnosti zdravljenja, kot so (I) zmanjšanje števila pa- togenih bakterij in vzpostavitev normalne ustne flore, (II) moduliranje imunskega odziva in (III) iz- boljšanje obnove poškodovanega tkiva, predvsem z dostavo ustreznih učinkovin v obliki nanozdravil, kot so liposomi, nanodelci in nanovlakna.
