During my work with elite athletes, I started to question this thesis and belief; moreover, I thought it was detrimental for future generations of athletes and sport teachers, so I decided to study it in greater depth. I found that self-confidence is mistakenly associated or interchanged with narcissism, and that the public persona of athletes is misidentified as the private persona. To properly understand these concepts and their connection with unfair practices like doping, we must delve into the basis of personality structure, i.e. the self. I will try to present this connection in the article"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Pogosto se sliši mnenje, da morajo biti športniki, če želijo doseči vrhunske rezultate, egoistični, še več, da je narcisizem kot osebnostna lastnost tisti faktor, ki jim omogoča uspešnost in premagovanje različnih ovir v športu (Roberts, Woodman, Hary, Davis in Wallace, 2013). Ob delu z vrhunskimi športniki sem vedno znova začela dvomiti o tej tezi in prepričanju, še več, zdelo se mi je škodljivo za prihajajoče generacije športnikov in športnih pedagogov, tako da sem se ga odločila podrobneje preučiti. Pri temu se je pokazalo, da se napačno povezuje in zamenjuje samozavest z narcisizmom in javno osebnost športnikov s privatno osebnostjo. Da lahko ustrezno razumemo te koncepte in njihovo povezanost z nepoštenimi dejanji, kot je tudi doping, se moramo poglobiti do osnove osebnostne strukture, tj. jaza.
