Neposredni predhodnik Zgodovinskega časopisa pa je bil Glasnik Muzejskega društva za Slovenijo (1919-1945), ki se je ob preoblikovanju Muzejskega društva za Slovenijo leta 1946 v Zgodovinsko društvo za Slovenijo tudi sam preoblikoval v Zgodovinski časopis.
