The following article describes known facts about the role of melatonin as an antioxidant and its influence on cell proliferation and apoptosis. Njegovafiziološka funkcija je, da okrepi cirkadiani ritem in vpliva na sezonski reprodukcijski cikel, povezan pa je tudi s spanjem. V zadnjem desetletju so odkrili, da melatonin deluje kot antioksidant in da vpliva tudi na celično delitev in smrt.
