The status and development trends of world and European forests are shortly assessed, which form the basis for understanding the process of formulating sustainable forest management policy and of the implementation of international environmental agreements comprising forests. The two documents, adopted at the UNFF7, the NLBI for all types of forests andthe Multiyear program of work (MYPOW), are presented in detail and basic information on the thematic program for forests of the CBD is given as well. Essential elements of the EU policy concerning forests and forestry are summarized and the most important tasks are described at the end, which will most likely have to be accomplished during Slovenia's EU Presidency"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"V prispevku je podan pregled bistvenih informacij, ki so pomembne v zvezi s predsedovanjem Slovenije EU v prvi polovici leta 2008 na področju gozdarstva. Na kratko so ocenjeni stanje in razvojni trendi gozdov v svetu in v Evropi, kiso temeljna podlaga za razumevanje procesa oblikovanja politike trajnostnegagospodarjenja z gozdovi in uresničevanja mednarodnih okoljskih sporazumov, ki zadevajo gozdove. Podrobneje sta predstavljena dokumenta, ki sta bila sprejeta na UNFF7, pravno nezavezujoč instrument o vseh tipih gozdov in večletni program dela UNFF, poleg tega pa tudi temeljne značilnosti tematskega programa CBD za gozdove.
