The initial development of telemedicine in surgical specialities, especially in orthopaedics, was first enabled by teleradiology and a concurrent development of teleconsultations. Numerous studies report on the advantages of using telemedicine, such as reduced number of diagnostic procedures, faster diagnostics, optimised treatment, better patient satisfaction and reduced costs of treatment. The development of telemedicine has also brought about the development of additional tools and applications that the consultant physicians and surgeons, e.g. telesurgery. In addition, telemedicine enables telemonitoring, teletutoring and teleconferences. The article reviews the literature on all these topics from the viewpoint of orthopaedics</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Telemedicina uporablja telekomunikacijsko tehnologijo za zagotavljanje zdravstvenih storitev na daljavo in predstavlja inovativno orodje tudi na področju kirurgije. Začetni razvoj telemedicine v kirurških strokah, zlasti na področju ortopedije, je najprej omogočila teleradiologija s sočasnim razvojem telekonzultacij. Številne študije poročajo o prednostih uporabe telemedicine, kot so zmanjšano število preiskav, hitrejša diagnostična obravnava, optimizacija zdravljenja, večje zadovoljstvo bolnikov in zmanjšani stroški obravnave. Hkrati je razvoj telemedicine doprinesel k razvoju dodatnih orodij in aplikacij, ki so v pomoč specialistom oz. kirurgom operaterjem, npr. telekirurgija. Poleg tega telemedicina omogoča spremljanje bolnika na daljavo, telementorstvo in telekonference.
