The article is a presentation of topics referring to ethnic relations, status and protection of minorities, as well as human rights and liberties in South Eastern Europe - more explicitely in the Balkans, particularly the so-called West Balkans, in the successor states of the former Yugoslav federation. The introduction defines the reasons why these issues are relevant for the Slovene territory, so in research studies as in politics. The text continues by defining the territory of South Eastern Europe, the Balkans and the West Balkans, pointing out the extensions of development of this space throughout history. It ascertains that nation states- as a specific type of state - are a relatively recent phenomenon in the Balkans, as they were only formed at the end of the 19th and in the 20th centuries. This fact is directly linked to most factors defining the situation in the field of human rights protection and national minorities, as well as to outbreaks of nationalism and disrespect of human rights"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"V prispevku avtor predstavlja tematike etničnih odnosov, položaja in varstva manjšin ter človekovih pravic in svoboščin v jugovzhodni Evropi - natančneje na Balkanu, posebej na t. i. zahodnem Balkanu, v preostalih državah naslednicah nekdanje jugoslovanske federacije. V uvodu opredeljuje, zakaj so ta vprašanja relevantna za slovenski prostor tako v raziskovanju kot politiki. V nadaljevanju definira prostor jugovzhodne Evrope, Balkana in zahodnega Balkana ter nakaže razsežnosti razvoja prostora skozi zgodovino. Pritem ugotavlja, da so nacionalne države - kot specifični tip države - na Balkanu relativno nedaven fenomen, saj so se oblikovale šele ob koncu devetnajstega stoletja in v dvajsetem stoletju.
