Relevant terminology is outlined andthe incidence, etiology and diverse clinical pictures of these infections are presented. The importance of accurate diagnosis based on proper urine collection and the need for prompt therapy, especially in the first year of life, are stressed. This is followed by a description of treatment, prognosis and morphologic studies with function tests done after first infection. A modern algorithm of investigations to be performed in children after first urinary tract infection and in those who are healthy or seemingly healthy, butat the highest risk of permanent renal damage, is presented. The content ofthis article was harmonized and approved by the medical board of the Department of Pediatric Nephrology, and represents the current doctrine of this clinical department. In this article, references to urinary tract infection denote bacterial infections of the urinary tract in infants and small children, unless a different population or etiology is specifically statedV preglednem članku o okužbi sečil pri dojenčkih in majhnih otrocih avtorja opredelita osnovne pojme izrazoslovja, prikažeta pogostnost in patogenezo bolezni ter raznolikost klinične slike. Posebej poudarita, da je osnova za zdravljenje natančna diagnoza, ki temelji na urinokulturi primerno odvzetega vzorca seča. Poudarita potrebo po zgodnjem zdravljenju, zlasti pri otrocih v prvem letu starosti. Opisani so zdravljenje, napoved izida bolezni ter slikovne in funkcijske preiskave po preboleli okužbi sečil. Prikazano je priporočeno zaporedje preiskav. Vsebina članka je usklajena in potrjena na strokovnem kolegiju Kliničnega oddelka za nefrologijo Pediatrične klinike in predstavlja doktrinarno stališče.
