Starting from the 1950s, we have seen numerous paradigm shifts, with each one contributing to the growing trend toward becoming an independent discipline within the humanities. This theoretical fascination began with the linguistic turn in the 1960s, followed by the pictorial and bodily turns in the 1980s, the affective turn in the 1990s, and most recently, the sensory turn. Od petdesetih let prejšnjega stoletja dalje smo priča številnim obratom paradigme, od katerih je vsak prispeval k naraščajočemu trendu lastne osamosvojitve znotraj humanistike. Ta trend se je pričel z lingvističnim obratom v šestdesetih letih prejšnjega stoletja, sledili so mu slikovni in telesni obrati v osemdesetih letih, afektivni obrat v devetdesetih letih in nazadnje še senzorialni obrat.
