Predstavniki teh sistemov so že dokazali, da ne omogočajo le večjega števila relevantnih zadetkov, temveč tudi samostojno uporabniško iskanje po podatkovnih zbirkah. V članku so prikazane naslednje sodobne tehnike iskanja informacij, ki temeljijo na uporabi statističnih metod: avtomatsko indeksiranje, iskanje podatkov po načelu optimalnega primerjanja in ponderiranje gesel.
