GIS information system enables storing and analyzing data, but it differs from other information systems as the data are linked to location. This enables presentation of data in map form. Therefore, the application of GIS is possible also in the field of library services, either for analysis of current services or for planning current or future services. By applying GIS, demographical data can be added to geographical data, which can result in better analysis or planning. In the paper the possibility of GIS application in the field of librarianship is presented, especially acquisition and use of publicly accessible geographical and demographical data. The majority of the needed data already exists, one only needs to find and use them properly. When using the already existing data we contribute to cost effectiveness and to the improvement of efficiency"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Geografski informacijski sistemi (GIS) so v današnjem času, informacijski dobi, vse bolj dostopni za splošno uporabo in posledično tudi vse bolj pomembni na vseh področjih uporabe. Sistem GIS je informacijski sistem, s katerim shranjujemo in obdelujemo podatke, pri čemer se od ostalih informacijskih sistemov razlikuje v tem, da ima vsak podatek še geografski položaj. Slednje nam omogoča, da lahko podatke prikazujemo tudi v obliki zemljevidov. Uporaba sistemov GIS je tako možna tudi na področju knjižničnih storitev, bodisi za analizo obstoječega stanja bodisi za načrtovanje obstoječih in potencialnih storitev. S sistemi GIS lahko geografskim podatkom dodamo tudi ustrezne demografske podatke, rezultat pa je lahko boljša analiza oziroma boljše načrtovanje. V prispevku je predstavljena možnost uporabe geografskega informacijskega sistema na področju knjižničarstva, pri čemer je podrobno prikazana pridobitev javno dostopnih geografskih in demografskih podatkov. Večina potrebnih podatkov že obstaja, potrebno jih je samo zbrati in ustrezno uporabiti. Podanih je tudi nekaj primerov, kako z uporabo sistemov GIS pripomoremo k ustvarjalnejšemu razvijanju knjižničnih storitev.
