It explains the working principle of cathodic protection starting from electrochemistry. Further on, it explains the nature of the electric current conduction through the ground and its distribution over the surface of the protected electrode. Both types of cathodic protection are discussed: the impressed current and the sacrificial anode. Different types of anodes are presented along with their characteristics, usage, and placement. Due to the significant differences in physical and chemical properties of various media, we delineate the specific features of cathodic protection application in water, soil, and concrete. Finally, risks related to the cathodic overprotection are presented along with some other challenges that are encountered in practice when using cathodic protection"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Prispevek predstavlja zgoščen pregled področja katodne zaščite. Princip delovanja katodne zaščite razložimo z izhodišči elektrokemije, v nadaljevanju pa osvetlimo fizikalno ozadje prevajanja električnega toka po zemljini in njegovi porazdelitev po površini ščitene elektrode. Obravnavamo obe vrsti katodne zaščite: z vsiljenim tokom in z žrtvenimi anodami. Predstavljamo različne vrste anod, njihove karakteristike, uporabo ter postavitev. Ker se mediji zelo razlikujejo po fizikalnih in kemijskih lastnostih, so razčlenjene specifične posebnosti uporabe katodne zaščite v vodi, v zemljini in v betonu.
