Dueto relatively poor clinical results their implantation has been restricted during the last decade. In order to reveal the reasons for their unsuccessful clinical performance, we examined the prosthetic components and periprosthetictissue of failed prostheses. A method of tissue digestion using sodium hydroxide followed by centrifugation of the digested tissues was used to separate polyacetal and polyethylene particles. Polyacetal particles were verified by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and polyethylene particles were identified by fourier-transform IR (FTIR) spectroscopy. Zardirelativno slabih kliničnih rezultatov se v zadnjem desetletju tovrstne proteze ne uporabljajo več. Da bi ugotovili razlog za njihovo neuspešnost, smopreiskovali odstranjene komponente protez ter tkivo okrog le-teh. Za izolacijo delcev smo uporabili metodo bazičnega razkroja tkiva in s centrifugiranjem ločili polietilenske in poliacetalne delce. S spektroskopijo energijske porazdelitve rentgenskih žarkov (EDS) smo identificirali delce poliacetala in z infrardečo spektroskopijo s Fourirjevo transformacijo (FTIR) delce polietilena.
