The changes over time in the effects of interest and perceived self-competences, as well as active classes, in the academic achievements of eighth-graders in Slovenia and three European countries have been studied. The analyses were based on the international achievement studies TIMSS and CIVED/ICCS. The time trends show that the achievements of eighth-graders has increased, as well as perceived selfcompetences on various domains - mathematics, science, civic education. The interest in various subject areas of eighth-graders in all four countries has decreased. The active classes of different subjects have increased in all countries. The most powerful predictors of achievement in all of the compared countries are SES and perceived self-competencies, and they are positively related and stable in all of the domains and countries. The effect of interest on the achievement has decreased in the last decade, and has been shown to have a negative effect in several countries, as well as the active classes. The effect of the student's genderis less stable, and decreases lately</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Motivacija je ključna v razumevanju učenčeve uspešnosti v šolskih procesih in učenju. Ugotavljali smo spremembe učinkov interesa in zaznanih lastnih kompetenc ter aktivnega pouka na znanje osmošolcev v Sloveniji in treh evropskih državah skozi čas. Analize smo oprli na mednarodne študije znanja TIMSS in CIVED/ICCS. Časovni trendi kažejo, da se znanje osmošolcev povečuje, prav tako tudi zaznane lastne kompetence na različnih področjih - pri matematiki, naravoslovju in državljanski vzgoji. Interes za različna predmetna področja se med osmošolci v vseh štirih državah zmanjšuje. Pogostost aktivnega pouka pri različnih predmetih v vseh državah narašča. Najmočnejša napovednika znanja v vseh primerjanih državah sta SES in zaznane lastne kompetence, ki sta z znanjem pozitivno povezana, in to stabilno na vseh področjih v vseh državah. Učinek interesa na znanje se v zadnji dekadi zmanjšuje in, tako kot aktivni pouk, negativno učinkuje na znanje različnih predmetov v več državah. SES je stabilno pozitivno povezan z znanjem osmošolcev na več področjih v vseh državah, prav tako tudi materni jezik.
