The nation-state status, aspired by the francophone community, was almost realized after the second referendum on that issue. In 1995 voters supporting the Canadian confederacy have, by a narrow margin of only 0.8% defeated eligible voters of the province seeking independence. The third referendum attempt, initiated by the PQ - the Party Quebecois, in year 2000, could result into the succession of the province of Quebec from Canada.
