The Municipality of Ljubljana has two important subsurface water-bodies: aquifer Ljubljansko polje and Ljubljansko Barje aquifer system. Among 102 potential water catchments and springs in the municipality there are 5 located outside the forest, 36 next to forest and 61 on the forest edge. In aquifers the forests with natural vegetation composition and stand structure are best for filtering pollution from neighboring agricultural areas, roads and urban centers, leaking into surface streams and groundwater. In areas, threatened by soil erosion, the forests play an important role as soil protection with deep root systems, precipitation interception and stabilizer of the movement of soil material. Soil erosion is problematic especially in the eastern parts of the municipality with hilly and mountainous terrains. Ohranjanje kakovosti in količine virov pitne vode je izredno pomembna ekosistemska vloga gozdov, še posebno tistih v urbanizirani krajini. Za oskrbo Mestne občine Ljubljana (MOL) z vodo sta pomembni predvsem dve telesi podzemne vode: vodonosnik Ljubljanskega polja in vodonosni sistem Ljubljanskega barja. Od 102 zajetij in izvirov, ki so razpoložljivi in obnovljivi vodni viri v MOL, jih je pet zunaj gozda, 36 jihv gozdu, 61 pa na gozdnem robu. V vodonosnikih so gozdovi z naravno ohranjeno rastlinsko sestavo in sestojno zgradbo pomemben filter za vnose onesnažil z okoliških kmetijskih površin, prometnic in urbanih površin v podtalnico in površinske vodotoke. Na erozijsko ogroženih območjih je vloga gozda z vidika ohranjanja režima in kakovosti vodnih virov predvsem ohranjanje stabilnosti gozdnih tal z močnimi koreninskimi sistemi, prestrezanje čim večje količine padavin in zadrževanje premikajočih se zemeljskih mas. Erozijsko ogrožena območja so predvsem v vzhodnem delu MOL, kjer prevladuje gričevnat in hribovit svet.
