Originally, photoanxiety was treated as an emotion that arises during fieldwork with vulnerable, politically marginalised groups. Confusion and anxiety can emerge during field research and later on, as part of the relationship between the researcher and the participant, with the camera serving as a significant element of that dynamic. Fototesnoba je bila sprva obravnavana kot čustvo, ki nastane na terenu z ranljivimi, politično zapostavljenimi skupinami. Zmedenost in tesnoba raziskovalke lahko vznikneta tako v času terenske raziskave kot tudi pozneje, kot del odnosa med raziskovalko in sodelujočimi, ko je pomemben del odnosa tudi fotoaparat.
