Born in the Grand Duchy of Baden in Southern Germany in 1830, he was brought to Lower Styria by his uncle Othmar Reiser, who served as Mayor of Maribor as well, already as a boy. The younger Reiser married Ida Puchelt, a protestant of Saxon origins, twenty-one years his junior. Serving at the City Council ever since 1861, he was elected mayor at the relatively young age of 40, remaining in this position for next twelve years. His tenure can be described as a small Maribor counterpiece to the "Gründerzeit" in Vienna. Immediately after the death of the famous son of Maribor, Wilhelm Tegetthoff, an initiative to erect a monument in his honour was started. On the other hand, Reiser opposed the activities of Maribor Slovenes to erect a monument to Anton Martin Slomšek, bishop of Lavant. Reiser died in 1895Matthäus Reiser je bil drugi član svoje družine na čelu Maribora. Rodil se je v velikem vojvodstvu Baden v južni Nemčiji 1830, na Štajersko pa ga je že kot dečka pripeljal stric Othmar Reiser, ki je bil prav tako župan. Reiser mlajši se je oženil z enaindvajset let mlajšo Ido Puchelt, protestantko saških korenin. Član občinskega odbora je bil že od leta 1861, relativno mlad, star štirideset let, pa je bil izvoljen za župana. Na položaju je ostal dvanajst let. Njegov mandat lahko označimo za majhno mariborsko ustreznico "ustanoviteljskemu času" na Dunaju. Takoj po smrti slavnega mariborskega sina, Wilhelma Tegetthoffa, je med Reiserjevim županovanjem vzklila pobuda o postavitvi spomenika v njegovo čast. Po drugi strani je župan nasprotoval podobni javni počastitvi za lavantinskega škofa Slomška na prostem.
