Keynes emphasized an uncertain, open world, in which society organizes its production and trading relationships by the use of money. Ta model se nanaša na gospodarstvo, v katerem je denar nevtralni numeraire, ki ne vpliva na odločitve o realni proizvodnji in potrošnji. Keynesov odgovor na klasično dihotomijo je teorija preference aktive, jedro katere je preferenca likvidnosti, tj. imetje denarja, ki razen transakcijske opravlja tudi funkcijo hranilca vrednosti. Po tej teoriji, obrestna mera vpliva na razporeditev aktive posameznikov med donosnimi oblikami in denarjem. Keynes je poudarjal dejavnik negotovosti v gospodarskem svetu zaradi česar se bodoče spremembe v proizvodnih in menjalnih odnosih ne morejo točno napovedati.
