First part of the article deals with the properties of a Rydberg hydrogen atom and expands the description to alkali metal atoms. Second part of the article uses the theory derived in the first part to explain the principles of electric field sensing with Rydberg atoms</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Rydbergovi atomi so atomi z enim ali več elektroni, ki zasedajo stanja z visokimi vrednostmi glavnega kvantnega števila n. V prvem delu članka so analizirane lastnosti Rydbergovih atomov na primeru atoma vodika in opisane razlike, ki nastanejo, če se namesto atoma vodika obravnava atom alkalijske kovine.
