These changes are described as the "athlete's heart". In men, athlete's heart is more frequently present than in women. We decided to test the following hypotheses: 1. Increased left ventricular mass in male athletes is related to higher blood pressure. 2. Increased left ventricular mass in male athletes is not related to intensity of training. 15 pairs of national sport dancing team and 30 control subjects (15 males, 15 females), were studied. In all subjects casual and 24-h ambulatory blood pressures, echocardiography and maximal stress testing were performed. Female in comparison to male dancers had significantly lower M-mode (p &lt; 0.004) and 2D left ventricular mass index (p &lt;0.001), 24-h systolic blood pressure (p &lt; 0.001), day (p &lt; 0.001) and night systolic blood pressure (p &lt; 0.001), and casual systolic blood pressure (p &lt; 0.000) and achieved significantly lower systolic blood pressure at maximal level of stress testing (p &lt; 0.004). Multiple stepwise regression analysis showed that the best predictors of 2D left ventricular mass index are maximal work load and peak exercise systolic blood pressure, 24-h systolic blood pressure, day and casual systolic blood pressure. Lower left ventricular mass index in female dancers can be partly explained by lower systolic blood pressures during 24-h and at exercise. Gender difference in left ventricular mass index is not related to the intensity of training, which is in sport dancing the same in both members of the pair</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Dolgotrajna športna aktivnost povzroči razvoj športnega srca, za katerega je značilna razširjena votlina levega prekata in povečana debelina sten ter masa levega prekata. Te spremembe so pri moških veliko pogostejše kot pri ženskih športnicah. Naš namen je preveriti naslednji hipotezi: 1. Večja masa levega prekata pri moških športnikih je povezana z višjim krvnim tlakom. 2. Večja masa levega prekata ni povezana z večjo telesno aktivnostjo pri moških v primerjavi z ženskami. Preiskovali smo 15 parov športnih plesalcev, članov državne reprezentance, in 30 kontrolnih oseb (15 moških in 15 žensk). Pri vsehpreiskovancih smo izmerili 24-urni krvni tlak in napravili ultrazvok srca ter obremenitveno testiranje na kolesu. Plesalci imajo v primerjavi s plesalkami statistično značilno višji indeks mase levega prekata, izmerjen s pomočjo M-mode (p &lt; 0,004) in 2D (p &lt; 0,001), 24-urni sistolični krvni tlak (p&lt; 0,001), dnevni (p &lt; 0,001) in nočni sistolični krvni tlak (p &lt; 0,001) in sistolični krvni tlak po Riva Rocciju (p &lt; 0,000). Plesalci so pri obremenitvenem testiranju na kolesu dosegli značilno višji sistolični krvni tlak ob maksimalni obremenitvi (p &lt; 0,004). Multivariantna analiza je pokazala, da indeks mase levega prekata, izmerjen z 2D-metodo, najbolje napovedujejo maksimalna obremenitev, ki jo je preiskovanec zmožen doseči na kolesu, sistolični krvni tlak pri maksimalni stopnji obremenitve, 24-urni sistolični tlak, dnevni sistolični krvni tlak, in krvni tlak izmerjen po Riva Rocciju. Večjo maso levega prekata pri moških športnikih lahko deloma razložimo z višjim krvnim tlakom.
