If hitherto infrastructures have had a decisive role in the development of the industrial society, the information infrastructure no doubt is cruical for the knowledge society. As the information infrastructure is not about a "thing" but rather about relation, its success depends on technical and social components. As a rule, it is developed in three typical phases: local elements are connected through coordination and technology transfer into networks, and then consolidate. Sociologitsts are engaged in this process in different ways in different phases, either in the form of providing feedback on the reactions of a social environment, or by beingpart of promotional activities, or by actively participating in all development processes. Their cooperation is vital as the information infrastructure, due to interference infixed relations, keeps triggering social conflicts and tensions that in mostcases cause projects to fail. In future, much greaterattention needs to be paid to the study of informatoin infrastructures, or esle we will not be able to understand the ever-expanding ecology of knowledgeInformacijska infrastruktura ima večino značilnosti infrastrukture, ima pa tudi posebnosti, med katere spada poudarjena interoperabilnost. Če so bile dosedanje infrastrukture odločilne za razvoj industrijske družbe, je informacijska odločilna za družbo znanja. O njeni uspešnosti odločajo tako tehnične kot družbene sestavine, saj ne gre za stvar, temveč za odnos. Informacijska infrastruktura se praviloma razvija v treh tipičnih fazah: lokalni elementi se s koordinacijo in prenosom tehnologije povezujejo v mreže in se konsolidirajo. Družboslovci se v ta proces vključujejo različno in v različnih fazah, in sicer v obliki povratnih informacij o odzivih družbenega okolja, v promocijskih aktivnostih ali z najbolj učinkovitim participativnim sodelovanjem v vseh fazah razvoja. Njihovo sodelovanje je nujno, ker informacijska infrastruktura zaradi poseganja v ustaljene odnose vedno sproža družbene konflikte in napetosti, ki so najpogostejširazlog neuspešnosti projektov.
