The article deals with the history and future of the Slovene Research Institute in Trieste. Founded in 1974, the initiative for its establishment was given already a decade earlier,due to the growing belief that the Slovene national community in the Friuli Venezia Giulia needed an institution which could quickly respond to dynamic processes in its environment. Aside from the primary research and action goals, SLORI is also active in the field of education, stimulating and organizing students' research work. Apart from the basic, theoretic research projects, SLORI is ever more active in the field of applicative research which gives ground to the assessment and opening of new development perspectives of the Slovene minority. Ustanovljen je bil leta 1974, pobuda zanj pa se je porodila že v desetletju prej, ko se je utrdilo prepričanje, da bi morala slovenska narodna skupnost v Furlaniji - Julijski krajini imeti ustanovo, ki bi se lahko hitro odzivala na dinamične procese v njenem okolju in lastni sredini. Poleg primarnih ciljev raziskovanja in delovanja, se angažira tudi na področju izobraževanja ter spodbuja in usmerja študentsko raziskovanje. Ob temeljnih, teoretskih raziskovalnih projektih, se v vse bolj udejstvuje pri aplikativno usmerjenih raziskavah ter projektih, ki bodo služili ugotavljanju in odpiranju novih razvojnih perspektiv slovenske manjšine.
