Decreasing mortality rates, prolongation of life span and decreasing of fertility are demographic events which ended with ageing populatioras in developed countries in the 20th century. As a consequence of apopulation growing older the enlarged demands on health, social, political and economy demands emerge. The article deals with the characteristics of demographic transition in Slovenia, the assessment of ageing population by theyear 2010 and 2020 and some consequences on health care as well as the mostfrequent causes of death which rates are higher in Slovenia than the average ones are in developed and Central and East European countries. Methods. Data from data basis located on the Institute of PublicHealth of the Republic Slovenia were used. Data on General practice, out of hospital specialists services and hospital discharge data were used besides Health ForAll data base of WHO. Not only the first attendance were counted in out of hospital health care butalso further attendance's for the same diagnose. We also used hospital discharge data and mortality data of Slovene citizens olderthan 64 years. Results. In the last forty years the percentage part of older people in a Slovenian population was growing from 9% to 14,6% in the year It is expected to grow on 19% by the year 2020. Concerning the health regions the highest enlarging of an old population by 2010 is anticipated in region Kranj and Ravne na Koroškem, the lowest in Murska Sobota. About 30% of health care was delivered to the elderly. Mortality rates in regions were negatively related to the number of attendance š in general practice or out ofhospital specialist care and positively correlated with hospital discharge rates. Mortality rates due to specific diseases and causes of death are still higher in Slovenia than in developed European countries. (Abstract truncated at 2000 characters)</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Izhodišča. Znižanje umrljivosti, daljšanje življenjske dobe in padanje rodnosti so pojavi, ki so v dvajsetem. stoletju v izrazitejši obliki pripeljali do staranja prebivalstva. Rezultati. Do leta 2020 bo najvišja relativna rast v regijah Kranj in Ravne na Koroškem, najmanjša v Murski Soboti. Okoli 30-odstotni delež zdravstvene dejavnosti je pripadal starim ljudem. Stopnje umrljivosti v regijah so bile obratno sorazmerne s številom obiskov v splošni oz. specialistični dejavnosti in sorazmerne s stopnjami bolnišničnih obravnav. Stopnje umrljivosti starejših prebivalcev zaradi nekaterih bolezni in vzrokov smrti so pri nas še vedno višje kot v razvitih evropskih državah.
