There is frequent talk of cultured and moderate drinking, which supposedly has positive health benefits. Alcoholic beverages are also a regular accompaniment to socialising, with a special place and praise accorded to them. In Slovenia, what is termed a wet culture predominates. This culture is characterised by an attitude of tolerance towards drinking alcohol, the presence of alcohol in culture and customs, where drinking alcohol is encouraged, with the pattern of alcohol drinking handed down from generation to generation, along with easy access to alcohol and an inadequate number of demonstrably effective prevention programmes. This is also reflected in the disturbing facts about the burden attributable to alcohol drinking.
