Due to its direct exposure to the environment, the skin is particularly vulnerable to interactions with microplastics found in personal care products, water, air, and even clothing. In the study published in 2023, Wang and colleagues observed that microplastics promote proliferation of skin cancer cells in squamous cell carcinoma lines, while reduced proliferation and increased cell death in normal skin cells was detected. Koža je zaradi svoje neposredne izpostavljenosti okolju še posebej ranljiva za interakcije z mikroplastiko, ki jo najdemo v izdelkih za osebno nego, vodi, zraku in oblačilih. Na dveh celičnih linijah ploščatoceličnega karcinoma so v študiji, objavljeni leta 2023, Wang in sodelavci pokazali, da mikroplastika spodbuja proliferacijo rakavih kožnih celic, po drugi strani pa pri normalnih kožnih celicah prisotnost mikroplastike zmanjša proliferacijo in spodbudi celično smrt.
