Premature ovarian failure affects about 1 % of women aged 30-39 and 0.1 % of women aged 15-29. Goal of review article is to explain influence of environmental and nutritional factors in aetiology of premature menopause. Methods: Literature review Results and Discussion: The toxic action of reactive oxygen species (ROS) resulting from exposure to chemical and physical factors or the insufficient activity of antioxidant systems plays a role in the apoptosis of secondary ovarian follicles. Recent epidemiological studies have found an inverse association between premature ovarian failure and vitamin D, calcium, zinc, selenium and copper concentrations in blood. The inverse relationship was also found in factors related to oestrogen concentration in blood: higher BMI, multiparity, late first pregnancy, late menarche and good nutritional status. In premature ovarian failure, indicators of oxidative stress are elevated, but all studies have been conducted on the subjects after diagnosis of premature ovarian failure. Increased levels of oxidative stress in premature ovarian failure do not in itself imply a causal relationship since increased levels of oxidative stress are characteristic of menopause. Conclusions: Further research should be directed towards identifying etiological factors and developing a predictive model for the onset of premature menopause. The predictive model would allow early identification of individuals at high risk for premature menopause, thus enabling early treatment and freezing of ovum. Targeted, early antioxidant supplementation in a group of women at high risk of premature menopause may have implications for subsequent onset of menopause. Preventive public health measures aimed at healthy lifestyle could influence the age of onset of menopause</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Uvod: Prezgodnja menopavza je arbitrarno opredeljena kot izguba aktivnosti ovarijev pred 40. letom starosti. Prezgodnja menopavza prizadene okoli 1 % žensk med 30. in 39. letom oziroma 0,1 % žensk v starosti od 15 do 29 let. Namen preglednega članka je razložiti vlogo okoljskih in prehranskih dejavnikov pri nastanku prezgodnje menopavze. Metode: Pregled literature. Rezultati in razprava: Toksično delovanje reaktivnih kisikovih spojin (ROS), ki je posledica izpostavljenosti kemičnim in fizikalnim dejavnikom ali nezadostnemu delovanju antioksidativnih sistemov, ima vlogo pri apoptozi sekundarnih ovarijskih foliklov. V novejših epidemioloških raziskavah ugotavljajo obratno povezanost med prezgodnjo menopavzo in koncentracijo vitamina D, kalcija, cinka, selena in bakra. Obratno povezanost ugotavljajo tudi pri dejavnikih, povezanih s koncentracijo estrogena, torej višji indeks telesne mase (ITM), multiparnosti, pozna prva nosečnost, pozna menarha in dobra prehranjenost. Pri prezgodnji menopavzi so kazalci oksidativnega stresa povišani, vendar pa so bile vse raziskave narejene na populaciji po diagnozi prezgodnje menopavze. Povišan nivo oksidativnega stresa pri prezgodnji menopavzi sam po sebi ne pomeni vzročne povezanosti, saj je povišan nivo oksidativnega stresa značilen za menopavzo. Zaključek: Nadaljnje raziskave bi bilo smiselno usmeriti v ugotavljanje etioloških dejavnikov in izdelavo napovednega modela za pojav prezgodnje menopavze. Napovedni model bi omogočil zgodnjo identifikacijo posameznic z visokim tveganjem za prezgodnjo menopavzo, kar bi omogočilo zgodnje zdravljenje in zamrzovanje spolnih celic. Morda bi ciljno, dovolj zgodnje dodajanje antioksidantov pri skupini žensk z visokim tveganjem za izid prezgodnje menopavze lahko vplivalo na kasnejši nastop menopavze.
