Several epidemiological and randomized controlled clinical trials show, that consumption of large amounts of fish oil (eicosapentaenoic acid, docosahexaenoic acid) reduces cardiovascular risk. Several mechanisms of cardioprotective effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids were proposed:hypolipemic, hypotensive, antiarrhythmic, antithrombotic effects and improvement in endothelial function. Conclusions. In order to achieve these cardioprotective effects, American authors recommend to eat two fish meals perweek with an emphasis on fatty fish. Patients with coronary heart disease should be encouraged to increase their consumption of omega-3 fatty acids to 2g per day preferably in diet. For those individuals who do not eat fish or have limited access to fish, a fish oil supplement may be considered. Supplements also could be a component of the medical management of marked hypertriglyceridemia (&gt; 8.5 mmol/l), a setting in which even larger doses (2 to 4 g/day) are required. This is allowed only under a physician's care due tothe fact, that such high doses could result in excessive bleeding in some individuals</dc:description><dc:description xml:lang="sl">Izhodišča. Izsledki epidemioloških in randomiziranih kliničnih raziskav kažejo, da uživanje velike količine ribjega olja (eikozapentaenojske in dokozaheksaenojske kisline) zmanjšuje kardiovaskularno tveganje. Opisujejo večmehanizmov zaščitnega učinka omega-3 večkrat nenasičenih maščobnih kislin: zniževanje maščob in krvnega tlaka, antiaritmično, antitrombotično delovanje in izboljšanje delovanja endotelija. Zaključki. Glede na poročila o kardioprotektivnih učinkih omega-3 večkrat nenasičenih maščobnih kislin ameriški avtorji priporočajo, da zdravi ljudje jedo ribe dvakrat na teden. Bolnikom s koronarno boleznijo priporočajo 1g omega-3 večkrat nenasičenih maščobnih kislin na dan. Uživajo naj jih predvsem s hrano. Tiste osebe, ki ribne marajo ali jim niso dostopne, lahko uživajo omega-3 večkrat nenasičene maščobne kisline v obliki kapsul.
