The findings are based on the analysis of the extensive data recorded by the City Study of the Project on European Theatre Systems (STEP). All the public theatrical events of one season (between the years 2010~2011) of these five cities were collected and divided into seven types of theatre: Spoken Theatre, Dance, Musical Theatre, Kleinkunst, Puppet and Object Theatre, Cirque Nouveau and Show, and Physical Theatre. Spoken Theatre clearly dominates in the majority of the cities (competing often with Musical Theatre). In the article, we also discuss how the cultural traditions, the structure of the theatre system, the policy aspects of the theatre system and the economics of theatre production influence the production, distribution and consumption of theatreNamen tega članka je opisati produkcijo in distribucijo na področju gledališča v mestih Aarhus (Danska), Debrecen (Madžarska), Groningen (Nizozemska), Maribor (Slovenija) in Tartu (Estonija) ter ugotoviti, ali razlike oziroma podobnosti med gledališkimi sistemi lahko povežemo z razlikami in podobnostmi med načini produkcije (kategorija: produkcija), distribucije (kategorija: izvedbe) in potrošnje (kategorija: obiski). Ugotovitve v članku temeljijo na analizi precejšnjega nabora podatkov, zbranih v okviru Študije mest Projekta za raziskovanje evropskih gledaliških sistemov (STEP). V navedenih petih mestih smo evidentirali vse javne gledališke dogodke v eni sezoni (med letoma 2009 in 2013) ter jih razdelili na sedem tipov gledališča: govorjeno gledališče, ples, glasbeno gledališče, kleinkunst, lutkovno gledališče in gledališče predmetov, cirque nouveau in šov ter plesno gledališče. V večini mest izrazito prevladuje govorjeno gledališče (ki mu pogosto konkurira glasbeno gledališče).
