In this context, Anton Pavlovich Chekhov’s play The Cherry Orchard comes to mind, but trees are also often symbolically felled in Czech classical drama. However, the metaphor is clearly still relevant in today’s postdramatic theatre; it has been adopted by the performing arts, and trees are once again being felled not only on Czech stages but also on Nordic ones. The study interprets the spread, age, and communicability of this theatrical metaphor as evidence of the essential connection between humans and eco- logical issues. This connection suggests that ecological concerns in theatre are not merely a recent trend, even though ecological themes have understandably become increasingly prominent in recent decades. The study therefore provides a brief overview of ecology in Czech theatre in recent de- cades from both perspectives. It also examines the range and resonance of the scenic metaphor of trees and the interesting coincidence that it became the main theme of two theatre productions, one Czech and one Norwegian. Finally, it presents historical exam- ples illustrating the strong tradition and potential of this metaphor in selected Czech and European dramaDrevesa in njihova sečnja se v klasični dramatiki različnih kultur pojavljajo kot pogosta in univerzalna metafora za ranljivost, krhkost reda in ogrožanje ravnovesja. Ena prvih asociacij v tej smeri je drama Češnjev vrt Antona Pavloviča Čehova, simbolična sečnja dreves pa je pogosto prisotna tudi v češki klasični dramatiki. Očitno je, da navedena metafora ostaja aktualna tudi v sodobnem postdramskem gledališču; prevzele so jo uprizoritvene umetnosti in sečnja dreves se ni ponovno vrnila le na češke, temveč tudi na nordijske odre. V pričujoči raziskavi poskušam razširjenost, starost in sporočilnost te gledališke metafore utemeljiti kot dokaz temeljne povezanosti človeka in ekološke problematike. Iz te povezanosti je razvidno, da ne gre le za trend v zadnjih desetletjih, ko aktualnost ekoloških tem seveda vse bolj narašča. Razmerje med ekologijo in gledališčem obravnavam tako z vidika delovanja gledališča kot tudi z vidika ekologije kot teme v gledališkem ustvarjanju. V raziskavi zato podajam kratek pregled ekologije v češkem gledališču zadnjih desetletij z obeh navedenih vidikov. Proučujem tudi razsežnost metafore dreves na odru ter zanimivo naključje, da je zadevna metafora osrednja tema dveh gledaliških stvaritev oziroma predstav, ene češke in ene norveške.
