It lasted almost 25 years and unexpectedly halted in 1973-1974. Economic growth during the period 1950-1973 has fundamentally changed the economies of both Western and Eastern Europe. This period was also characterized by an international monetary and economic system known as the Bretton-Woods system, with the U.S. as a central point. One of the central aims of that system was to prevent the possibility of a repetition of the Great Depression. Faced with oil shocks in the seventies, the system was abandoned. Western European countries responded without delay with changes in economic policies. Socialist Eastern European countries responded inadequately, which prolonged the crisis until the final collapse of the socialist economic systemZlata doba gospodarskega razvoja Evrope je sledila obdobju obnove po drugi svetovni vojni. Trajala je skoraj petindvajset let. Nepričakovano se je končala v letih 1973 in 1974. Gospodarski razvoj v obdobju 1950-1973 je temeljito spremenil gospodarstva zahodnoevropskih in vzhodnoevropskih držav. To obdobje je bilo hkrati obdobje mednarodne denarne in gospodarske ureditve, znane pod imenom brettonwoodska ureditev, z osrednjo vlogo ZDA. Ena med najpomembnejšimi nalogami ureditve je bila preprečiti možnost ponovitve Velike krize. Po naftnih šokih je bila opuščena. Zahodnoevropske države so brez odlašanja spreminjale svoje ekonomske politike osrednjo točko ureditve.
