As library catalogs have not kept in touch with the changing online environment, more and more unsatisfied users have started to look for information elsewhere. With its success and popularity, Amazon demonstrated what users and also librarians wished the library catalog looked like. The purpose of the diploma thesis was to identify the main Amazon features that make it so special and give it the advantage over the library catalogs. Based on the examined literature, six main areas and 43 features for further exploration were defined. In July 2007 an expert study was carried out to investigate the presence and the execution of those features and to compare Amazon to library catalogs. The study showed that the traditional library catalog differed from Amazon the most, while newer catalogs had already begun to incorporate features that can be found in Amazon (often even in the same form as in Amazon). Newer catalogs offer a wider range of enriched content and features and at the same time enable easier and more intuitive search. But so far none of the catalogs brings the user the complete package of features Amazon does, especially falling behind on user profiles and active participation of users in creation of content. Libraries still have a long way to go, as it is only with the development and modernization of catalogs they will be able to fight their position on the web. Some of the libraries are already on a good path, but most of them have not yet begun with the transformation"},{"@xml:lang":"sl","#text":"Razvoj spleta, novih trendov in tehnologij spreminja pričakovanja uporabnikov v interakciji z online katalogi. Knjižnični katalogi niso ostali v koraku s spreminjajočim se spletnim okoljem, zaradi cesar je vse več nezadovoljnih uporabnikov začelo iskati informacije drugje. Amazon je s svojim uspehom in priljubljenostjo pokazal, kakšnih katalogov si želijo uporabniki in tudi knjižničarji. Namen diplomskega dela je bil ugotoviti, katere so tiste poteze in funkcije Amazona, ki ga delajo posebnega in mu dajejo prednost pred knjižničnimi katalogi. Na podlagi pregledane literature je bilo definiranih šest osnovnih področij in 43 funkcij oziroma značilnosti za nadaljnji pregled. V juliju 2007 je bila izvedena ekspertna študija, ki je preverjala prisotnost in izvedbo teh funkcij v Amazonu in šestih izbranih knjižničnih katalogih ter Amazon primerjala s katalogi. Rezultati so pokazali, da je od Amazona najbolj oddaljen klasični katalog, medtem ko novejši katalogi že počasi vnašajo možnosti, kakršne je moč najti tudi na Amazonu (pogosto tudi v enaki obliki kot na Amazonu). Novejši katalogi ponujajo pestrejšo ponudbo obogatenih vsebin in možnosti ter omogočajo lažje in bolj intuitivno iskanje. Zaenkrat noben od katalogov se ne prinaša tako celostne ponudbe kot Amazon, najbolj pa zaostajajo na področju uporabniških profilov in omogočanja aktivne udeležbe uporabnikov pri kreaciji vsebin. Knjižnice čaka se precej dela, saj si bodo le z razvojem in modernizacijo katalogov izborile svoje mesto na spletu.
