It also highlights the need to improve the health literacy of the Slovenian population. A prerequisite for the planning and development of interventions that can help to improve health literacy, and consequently the health and quality of life of the Slovenian population, is research into health literacy at national level. This is made possible by an integrated approach that involves a study of all the basic dimensions of health literacy (accessing, understanding, appraising and applying health information) in the domains of health care, disease prevention and health promotion. In order to develop targeted interventions, it is also crucially important to study the links between health literacy and the social determinants of health, health status, health-related behaviour and the use of health care services.
