PLANNING AN EXPERIMENTAL OSI-NETWORK FOR INTERLENDING IN EUROPE iM ok Costers Stichling Centrum voor Bibliotlieek-automatisering Pica, Leiden, The Netherlands In the beginning of 1989 a working group, consisting of representatives of LASER (UK), DBMIST/SUNIST (France) and Pica (Netherlands), presented a proposal to the Commission of the European Community. The proposal calls for the Commission to fund, in part, an Open System Interconnection (OSI) Pilot Demonstration Project for Interlending be tween Library Networks in Europe. Computer-supported interlending services have been developed within several European countries in order to enable resource sharing and to make the combined collections of libraries within a country available to end- users. The networks which now exist for interlending are incompatible in terms of language, procedures and technical connectivity. By using the OSI application protocols for library functions in addition to the generally accepted protocols for message handling the working group proposes to develop an OSI-network for the interconnection of the library networks of the UK, France and the Netherlands. In this way it will be possible to share the collections of research libraries in the participating countries for the benefit of the end-users. This paper will explain more of the details of the plan with respect to technical and organisational aspects. Knjižnica. Tematska St. IA TU L I989 47
