One New Member Per Officer Enrolled in First Week of Campaign!
Branch 2, Chicago, 111., a charter branch in the Slovenian Women’s Union of America, is celebrating its 45th anniversary this year by moving fast and enrolling new members in the 45TH ANNIVERSARY CAMPAIGN! As of press-time, they have increased their membership by 15 new members, eleven of them enrolled in the first week of the campaign by their loyal officers pictured here.

The Slovenian Women’s Union is again presenting an opportunity for members ages 17 to 20 years of age to be presented in a most beautiful ceremony, under the auspices of the S.W.U. The young ladies will be guests of honor at the Ball which is open to all members and their friends.
The young ladies will be received in the traditional way, wearing long white gowns and with their fathers, will form a grand march around the hall. Their intro-dutions to the assembled guests will be the highlight of the evening, along with a “cotillion” dance by the ladies and their partners. All the guests will enjoy dinner and dancing afterward to the music of Johnny Pecon and Lou Trebar’s orchestra.
The requirement for participating in this event is that both mother and daughter must be members of the S.W.U. in order for the daughters to be included. Join now and be a part of this second Cotillion Deb Ball. Deadline for girls to enter the cotillion will be March 31st. Happy New Year to all our readers. May you enjoy happiness, peace and prosperity throughout the coming year.
Our Penny Social in November was a great success. So many of our members responded to our invitation that St. Stephen’s church hall was almost too small. It was a fun evening, made up of popular games and a lot of laughs mixed in with a few disappointments when some-
paign each officer of her respective branch is requested to do her part in getting at least one new member. Our Founder who organized the Slovenian Women’s Union 45 years ago and who is still with us, Marie Prdsland has a greatest wish that each officer in Zveza would get one new member. We all realize that Marie Prisland has devoted all her time to Zveza by promoting, writing, attending many functions of Zveza and other numerous jobs she has done the past 45 years so the least we can do for her to show our appreciation is to get one new member each during this campaign. Let us all try our best and to the one who writes in most new members will get the surprise package.
I attended the Dawn Choral group concert which was held Sunday Nov. 28, 1971 at Recher Hall, it was a great success; the hall was filled to capacity. The singing was beautiful which was enjoyed by all. Duets were sung by Olga Klanchar and Carolyn Budan, Ann Gabrenja and Albina Teachar, Frances Nemanich and Julia Gorensek and Tilli Spehar and Mimmi Režonja. Quartet was sung the three Janchar sisters Mary Gerl, Albina Teacher, Theresa Skur and their cousin Ann Gabrenja. Songs were all sung in Slovenian and pronunciation was perfect. Accompanying the singers was young Margaret Gorensek, Director Eng. Frank Gorensek is to be highly complimented on the fine work he had performed on directing the ladies to their successful concert.
Our guests from Chicago were Dr. and Mrs. Leopold Humar. Mrs. Humar, our Nat’l Secretary enjoyed meeting all the guests.
In behalf of all the Cleveland Zveza members and myself I wish to express our sympathy to the family of Stella Dancull who is our faithful secretary of Br. 21 and also active with the combined branches of Cleveland on the loss of her daughter-in-law Mrs. Kenneth Dancull. Also we all wish her son, Kenneth, a speedy reccvery from the serious injury involved in a car accident which was hit by a train near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Son Kenneth was employed by Westinghouse Co., Anyone wishing to mail a get well card can do so by sending to Mr. Kenneth Dancull —Methodist Hospital— St. Paul, Minnesota.

one else won the prize we were eyeing. To make en evening like our Penny Social a success hard work of many and cooperation of ail are required. It was evident on this occasion that we had everyone’s cooperation. The ladies attending showed their good will by bringing many, many gifts as well as baked goodies and by being very happy and jovial throughout the evening. Our secretary received numerous letters, many with gifts or cash enclosed, from the ladies who couldn’t
attend. With such spirit and so much unselfishness we can look forward to many more years of productive growth for our organization. Many thanks to all who gave of themselves, their time and money to make this event possible.
Our wishes for a speedy recovery go to Dr. Ludwig Leskovar, our able editor’s husband. May the good Lord restore his energy 60 that he may once again enjoy his full, busy life with his family.

Highlights of the Choral Concert
November 28 was our big day and indeed it was with a beautiful concert and a large attendance to enjoy it and encourage us. And success it was!
All wore their pink gowns which made it look attractive.
Our ladies worked hard but it was a pay off.
Fanika Humar, our National Secretary, with her husband was our guest from Chicago. We appreciate her visit and hope she enjoyed concert.
The Dawn Choral Group will again start working to prepare for our 5th Anniversary next year on Nav-ember 26. This we want to make some special numbers.
We appreciate the Cleveland Branches who made a showing. A guest was present from Niles Branch 57, Mrs. Frances Yerman to whom we are grateful. Thanks to our National President, Antonia Turek, who gave a hand as a Hostess at the door which helped when the singers had to be on stage. A special thanks to Molly Sodja and Ann Tekavec for giving a hand serving until the gang got to it after changing.
Thanks to J. Trunk’s daughter, Sally Furliich, for supplying such beautiful decorations for our stage. And thanks to the whole committee: Frances Nemanich Josephine Trunk, Mitzi Globokar, Josephine Comen-shek, and of course, the Board, that is, yours truly, Pauline Krall, Frances Globokar, Ann Hočevar. We were all doing our part. Our group all helped where it was needed. The cooperation was tops from all. Our Director, Mr. F. Gorensek, worked very hard and spent much time to present us to the public with beautiful songs. Compliments were tremendous and credit goes to Mr. F. Gorensek! We are proud of him.
I want to thank Margaret Gorensek for such a wonderful job as pianist for our concert.
On the sick list we have one of our members, Rose Miekovic. We all missed her. We wish her a speedy recovery and hope she will soon return to our rehearsals.
The Dawn Choral Group sends our Sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Bob Klanchar on the death of Mr. Klanclhar’s father. May he rest in peace.

A RESPONSIBLE CONSCIENCE
A prominent teacher once compared conscience to a triangle in the heart. “When I do wrong, this triangle starts to spin and its corners cut and hurt. This is a signal to stop doing wrong. If I continue to do wrong, the triangle spins faster until its edges wear off. Then it doesn’t hurt any more”.
This can lead us to a good definition. Conscience in not an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, giving us contradictory advice. It is not just a feeling that something is right or wrong. It is a judgement made by my mind which tells me that an action to be performed here and now is either right or wrong. A well-develcped conscience lines up all the facts and then the mind makes a decision.
Conscience maybe correct or erroneous. It is correct when it agrees with the law of God. God says, for instance; “Don’t steal”. His words are the law. I am tempted to take a gold watch which belongs to someone else; but I know that I must not do this because of God’s words. I have a correct conscience because I have rightly applied the law of God to a particular action.
Freedom of conscience does not mean that I can arbitrarily decide what is right or wrong according to my personal viewpoint and desires. No man is a law to himself. I must excercise responsible freedom. That is, 1 must recognize that I am a part of the world God has made and I must be ready to accept the guidelines which God has set up with regard to my duties to Him, to my neighbor and to myself.
Everything I do has an effect on others. I cannot just consider my own personal feelings. I must take into account the rights of others. I knew this even as a child. When I started to play football and basketball, I soon realized what “out of bounds” meant. In baseball I learned quickly enough that three strikes is out for all the players — whether I happened to own the baseball or not.
The same is true with regard to the moral law which direct man toward the purpose for which God made him.

Our Nov. 3rd meeting was held at St. Mary’s Parish hall. Discussion for a Christmas party to be held Dec. 1st with exchange of gifts. One of our members, Mrs. Katherine Jacklovich passed away. Oct. 30th. Eternal rest grant unto her, O, Lord.
We have a new member, Carol Joyce Drobnich. We had a large group in attendance at our meeting,
Mrs. Frances Simonich, our secretary, is recovering from recent surgery. The members were served del-
icious pumpkin pies by our president, Olga Mesojedec and pumpkin cookies by Mrs. DiNero.

Our meeting Nov. 14th was as usual on Holmes Ave. at 2 p.m. called to order by our president, Ann Markovič. Opening pra yers and special prayers were for our deceased members, Agnes Slovenec, Josephine Kogoj and Mary Maloverh.
Our sincerest sympathies to the remaining families.
The Dawn singing group had their fall concert in November and we hope they will have glowing reports of a wonderful day and good attendance. They deserve our best wishes.
In December, we had election of officers for the coming new year and Christmas party planned with gift exchange. Happy birthdays to our president, Ann Markovič and Josie Brusic and to me, Sophie Magayna. We had a nice day and good meeting.
Our prayers and best wishes to all our sick and shut-in members. A prosperous New Year to all.

November started out with a good day for those of us who took the trip to Halger Pottery, had lunch at the Viking, a few blocks away and a very good and complete dinner. It was then on to Lee Wards for a bit of shopping and last stop was at the Antique Village where we saw ever so many treasures ait pretty high prices —much like what many of us have thrown away as junk! It was very refreshing to see the “old time” stores with most things still kept in “apothecary jars”. I’m sure we all felt the trip well worth the price and time away from the usual day’s routine of life.
Our meeting was a very pleasant one and those who weren’t there missed a very, very good lunch of sausage, potica and a birthday cake for Mrs. Plesko, baked by Evelyn Laurich and the rest of the lunch donated by Mrs. Celia Novak and her daughter, Mary Starich who also had birthdays in November. We do wish they all enjoy many more with us, especially Mrs. Novak, who couldn’t be there as she was in St. Luke’s Hospital at the time. We also extend prayers and wishes for recovery to all our sick members — the most recent being Helen Pre-sechnik at Cameo Nursing Home, also Mrs, Jenny Ahcin and Mrs. Werderstich. Keep them all in mind when you say your prayers.
The card party we had on Nov. 21st was a real success thanks to good work by the committee: Mary Evanich, Jo Wilhelm, Stavia Dober-sek, Mrs. Plesko and Evelyn Laurich who as usual, had charge of coffee aaid strudel sales.
Strudels were donated by the Mmes. Kratchnik, Pipan, Pe r k o, Medved, Plesko, Laurich and Dežman and the coffee donated by Stavia Dobersek.
We wish to express our thanks and gratidude for all those who attended and we were especially happy to see the good cooperation in attendance of our sister groups from No. 17 and No. 43. Let’s all try to keep this good faith and help in each other’s affairs, as it keeps us in better touch aside from the state conventions.
Here’s hoping there are more at the meetings of the new year. We will report on the Christmas party and yearly meeting next month. Remember the new cookbooks are now available from Mrs. Plesko or myself as well as the “From Slovenia to America” book by our Founder, Mrs. Prisland. Sincerely,

BOWLING NEWS
The Chicago S.W.U. bowling league rolled into the holiday season with Marquette Super Servicsn (25i wins and 7i losses) strengthening their lead over second place K. and K. Market (19^ wins and 13!4 losses). In third place was Zafran Funeral Home with 19 wins and 14 losses.
The rest of the top positions are still up for grabs with three teams tied at 16^ wins and 1654 losses: Syn-sol Corp., Dr. Grill and Reliance Federal.
Thanksgiving was a little brighter for the lucky turkey winners who bowled the most pins over average on their teams on Nov. 16. They were: Stelle Gorka, Liz Zefran, Ruth Haas, Kay Stonis, Ann Fingerhut, Helen Drobec, Bea Schacht, Fran Smulski, Frances Wrezzes, Joan Muelleman.
We added some new names to our list of bowling stars in November. Ann Vucko was the outstanding bowler of the month, with a 56'6 series, which included games of 154, 199 and 213. She also had a 520 series during the month, with a 215 game.
Liz Zefran surprised herself with a 385 series, which was 82 pins over her 101 average. Ruth Haas was 81 pins over her 135 average, with a 486 series. Ann Finprerhut bowled 78 pins over her 114 average, with a 420 series. Fran Wrezzes rolled a 376 series—76 pins over her 100 average.
Some other high series: S. Gorka, 539 and 501; D. Maes, 515 (200 game); B. Schacht, 510; E. Kroschel, 508; H. Fitzgerald, 501. Shirley Melissa had a 208 game.
We now have a little more incentive each wrek with pot game prizes for high handicap scores. The winners on Nov. 16 were; high series —B. Schacht, and high—F. Wrezzes, 207.
Last month we neglected to mention that Lorraine Ovnik will win a patch from the W.I.B.C. for her triplicate games of 144 on Sept. 28.

each and every officer. One of the best ways to offer congratulations to them is to give them our full cooperation and help. Bes;de expressing our good wishes to the new board, we would also like to say “Thank You” to Mrs. Theresa Skur who has worked so hard for our branch as President for that last few years. Branch 14 has been very lucky to have such diligent workers to head the organization.
Since Christmas Time is really a time of giving, our ladies took no exception to the spirit and generously donated to two worthwhile charities. The Mary Mavec School and the Holy Family Cancer Home received our help. Not only did the Treasury contribute, but also members themselves donted to them.
Another highlight of the evening was Mrs. Leskovec’s donation of a delicious chocolaite candy decoration that contained about 10 pounds of chocolate. Her idea was to sell tickets and donate half of the proceeds to the Treasury and half to the Missions. The ladies; however; felt that all the proceeds should go to the needy. Mrs Leskovec was delighted and the missions with all the help of the ladies received a generous donation.
With all the rush, work, and ag-grevation that the Holidays bring, we ar« proud that the S.W.U. can say that they haven’t lost the true meaning of Christmas. May the Infant Jesus bless all of you.

She notes with pleasure that she has been a member of the S.W.U. for thirty-eight years, thirty-six of which she has served as President of Branch No. 20. The Slovenska ženska Zveza has always been very dear to her heart. She has devoted many years of hard work and her talents for the betterment of the branch and the community. Daughter, Bertha, was a charter Cadet and held the position of Lieutenant along with Captain Jo Goron. Both mother and daughter were also avid bowlers. Bertha Hofer has lived in Shorewood, 111. for 21 yrs. She has served as Shorewood Village Clerk for two terms and filled an unexpired term as Village Trustee. Presently she is serv'ng on the Parks & Recreation Committee and also the Sanitation Committee. While living in Shorewood, Judy Williamson ass:sted her mother in the Village Clerk’s Office and also served as Deputy Clerk under the present Clerk. However, she has been living in Joliet since the beginning, of this year. Tina and son, J. J. along with husband, Jack, now keep her busy at home.

Wisconsin State Day and convention was held in Sheboygan in accord with their 45th. anniversary. Congratulations and best wishes are extended to Br. No. 1 and to Mrs. Marie Prisland, the organizer. A day to be well remembered; the successful convention meet:ng, the impressive memorial Mass, the inspiring sermon by Rev. Claude Okorn, a del'cious banquet at the Grand Executive Inn, and a delightful entertainment program. Much credit goes to Branch No. 1 for their hard work in seeing that everyone went home with pleasant memories.
To date we have lost the following members; Frances Marolt, Mary Selendich. Theresa Kerhin, Theresa Bozich of California, and Mary Kranjec who passed away recently. Our deepest sympathy is extended to the berraved families. May they all rest in peace.

At the meeting Mary Koljat, Olga Ozanich, Mary Iskra, and Mary Ucman donated to our Treasury. The Good Time fund was “fattened” by contributions from Katie Jacolbs, Rose Rupert, Frances Kovach, An-to;netter Zabukovec, Pauline Cesar, Mary Ucman, and Stana Grill. Their donations go toward the special fund that enables our Branch to have socials every few months for the members who attend; something that alwavs is looked forward to by the m^mb^rs, for it gives them a chance to stay awh;le after the meetings and just visit with their friends.

The past year came around so quickly, and here we are in the new year of 1972. Many wer.e fortunate to enjoy health during the year, others enjoyed various family celebrations. To all, a wish for continued happiness and health during the year, but to those who entered the new year with poor health may God give and restore health very promptly.
At our meeting, “Get-Well Cards” signed by members who attended were to members Frances Sega, Mary Valentich, and Mary Gsrl. Ail are long time members, and we hope they recover soon. Also we remembered —Lud Leskovar, the husband of our editor, Corinne Leskovar— who was very ill the past weeks with a difficult surgery. May he recover very soon and join his happy family, as he is missed by all who know him. (Thank you for your concern and prayers, c.).
At our November meeting, members with name of Catherine were honored. Since many of them were ill, our attending member Catherine Kness was specially honored. The delicious strudel baked by Mrs. Johnna Krall was very much in demand by the members. Beautiful bouquet of mums with gold ribbons was presented to Mrs. Kness. For our December meeting memihers with name of Barbara will be honored. Mrs. Kness is the sister of our auditor, Theresa Marentich.
As I am writing this report the oldest son of Millie Pucel is preparing for his Christmas holiday vacation from Lewis College and will fly to France where he is to meet his brother Philip who is studying in there. For the Christmas week they will go to Slovenia to visit relatives—to enjoy a real Slovenian Christmas. They will stay there a week and then tour other countries until Christopher will fly back home to continue his studies.
Hope they both have a nice Christmas in Slovenia.
The annual Church Card Party under the chairmanship of Br. 20 with Olga Ancel as chairman was grand. The net profit amounted to $28,149.36.

Plans, plan and discussions regards our December meeting,
Christmas annual social Wednesday Dec. 1st took precedence in November.
October meeting was sparsely attended. Inclement weather was good reason; first Wednesdays do come upon us suddenly. We need a 'town crier to announce the date and occasion for us ladies.
Please circle the date every first Wednesday on your calendars because this meeting can be fun, we promise, if we attend in numbers So much is being done to make the event enjoyable; the usual donors are even more generous.
Your officers sincerely wish to make this a happy get-together for all so why not go out on a limb and get a friend member to join us for a happy exchange of gifts and cheer?
At the November meeting it was gratifying when six members more than customary dropped in to help along with suggestions and motions. Good to see you Marie, Fran, Jo, Mayme, Ann, and Fran Danner who is recovering from foot surgery. We’re happy to be surprised so drop in often; each of us plays a valuable part.
Those of us who heard or paid a recent visit reported news of ailing members, shut-ins or any news of our sisters. We’ll be visiting each of you soon. A November mass for our deceased remembered our poor souls.
We are saddened to hear Mary Nosan is hospitalized and wish her a fast recovery. Congratulations to Mary Hosta on her recent retirement! Well earned, Mary.
Happy Joyful Holidays to all especially our ill, aged, lonely friends. Rember one such human being, take him into your heart. The new year will be joy if we express thoughtfulness, generosity, humility and a visit. Our Lord will remember.

Plans for the annual Christmas Dinner party and meeting of the Ely Dawn Club were discussed and formulated at the November meeting of the organization at which 30 members were present. Mary Gotch-nik presided over the session in the absence of Margie Preshiren, prs-ident.
The Christmas Party was to be held Wednesday, December 15, at
Bridgeman’s in the American Legion building.
The business session was to include election of officers for 1972. 1971 officers were; Margie Preshiren, president; Mary Gotchnik, vice-president; Ann Levar, secretary and Mary Stupnik, treasurer.
Table decorations for the Christmas Party were in charge of Molly Marolt and Rose Novak. Hostesses for the November meeting were, Victoria Skala, Rose Pucel, Jeanette Vidmar, Theresa Koschak and Frances Pengal.

With the final meeting for 1971 of Branch 34, almost all the active members showed up for an evening of fun and warm friendship. Mrs. John Pahula presided at the November (17) meeting where it was decided to dispense with the December meeting because of so many other activities in which the women are involved in December. Instead of a Christmas Party, the members plan an out of town dinner meeting in May, before summer recess.
During the business meeting a donation was made to the Christmas Seal Fund.
After the business meeting a social hour was held and winners at cards were Mmes. Edward Dragavon and John Pahula. Winners at COOTIE were Mmes. Ernest Mustonen and John Tekautz.
The hostesses, Mrs. Herman Mesojedec and Mrs. John Bobenee served a tasty dessert to conclude the evening. Mrs. Joseph Mesojedec was awarded the attendance prize, donated by Mrs. Ernest Johnson.
Named as hostesses for the January meeting, —first meeting of the New Year are Mrs. Joseph Gor-nick and Mrs. Joseph Skala, and Mrs. William Lilya will furnish the door prize.
Our sympathy goes out to our Member, Mrs. Joseph (Mary Tekautz) Gornick of Tower who lost her husband in a tragic accident on Nov. 4 when he was working under his car which was supported by a jack and the jack slipped crushing him beneath the automobile. The tragedy was discovered by his wife, who went to the garage to summon him for dinner.
Besides Mrs. Gornick he is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Mary Ann) Berg of Tower and Mrs.
1972 SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS
The Slovenian Women’s Union takes pleasure in announcing its annual scholarship award's for qualified high school seniors graduating in 1972. Four awards will be granted, one of which will be $250.00 in honor of Dr. Adoph Žnidarčič who has contributed $750.00 to the Scholarship Fund. And which will be given to the winner with the highest scholastic record. The other three scholarships wtill be $200.00 each.
For those of you interested in applying for application forms please write Mrs. Hermine Dicke 3717 Council Crest; Madison, Wisconsin 53711. To be elegible for a scholarship, a high school senior must have been a member of the Slovenian Women’s Union for at least three years and plans to attend an accredited college or university. In the case of male students, the mother of the applicant should have been a member for at least three years, and in the event of her death a grandmother or sister must be a member for at least three years. Only one scholarship can ever be granted to members of any one family. Members of a particular branch cannot receive a scholarship in two successive years.
The deadline for completing application forms is March 31st. Please submit your application as soon as possible to allow enough time to gather the necessary information.

Robert (Margaret) Ahearn of Scottsdale, Arizona: two brothers, Anton Gormck of Phoenix Arizona and Raiph Gormck of St. Paul, Minnesota; two sisters, Mrs. Jonn (Juha Nygard of St. Paul, and Mrs. Larry (Theresa) Hoberock of Neosho, Missouri and eleven grandchildren. Our meeting was held the first Thursday in November and it is rather hard to remember all the events to report. By the time you receive this Zarja, it seems to be old news.
Time is very precious and also passes quickly. Our Oct. Card Party is past, we are now recalling a wonderful past and looking ahead as we set “high” the ideals and goals we hope to reach in 1972.
The Card Party at Rebemisek’s Club 36 was a great success. Cash donations were given by Anna Go-rishek, Mary Plahuta, Pauline Plesko, Mary Musich and Jennie Kouchich. The groom’s brother, Jerry Baum was best man and the groomsmen were Neal Moenigmann and Robert Bilzing. Reception folio wed immediately after the ceremony. Clarice, I wish you and Terry a long and happy life together. The bride and groom are both teachers at the Gauledett School for the Deaf.

The S.W.U. ladies met at the Little Grove in November. At that time plans for the Dec. meeting were made. It was to be at Kuko’s Supper Club on Dec. 1st. A smogasboard dinner was to be featured and election of officers was also planned for this time.

that everyone is well and on the road to a speedy recovery.

Even though our area is at the present writing experiencing our first taste of cold ana snowy weather (Thanksgiving Time), many of our memoeis have already traveled to warmer climates - evidently to buiid up additional and beneficial sunshine rays against this part ot the country 6 long and cold dreary winters.
The latter part of October found our Vice President, Ann Fike and her lady friend flying to Florida for five days and nights. They rented a car and took in all the sights in and around the Tampa Bay area as well as the new Disneyland.
Mrs. Ann Predovic, sisters Martha Herak, Alice Biscan, Margaret Spu-dich, plus four friends including Betty Adamovich, took advantage of a tour planned by the Ohio Bell Telephone Company to Las Vegas, flying out of Cleveland October 21st and spending four days and three nights in this glamorous town. Mr. Predovic is an employee of Ohio Bell, and Ann and her husband have already taken advantage of other tours sponsored by this company and are planning more the near future. All the ladies were thrilled with the trip, and saw many shows where some of our famous movie stars and television personalities were performing, one being the famed “Jerry Lewis”.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chesnik (Mary) and Mr. Chesnik’s sister — Mary Schneider, left by bus on November 9 th to visit Frank Chesnik, Jr. and family now residing in Lexington, Kentucky, and then to
Conyers, Georgia where their daughter Leona and her family reside. The three travelers expected to extend their stay long enough to enjoy Thanksgiving in Georgia.
Mr. and Mrs. Lee Epley (Louisa) and friends Mr. and Mrs. A1 Lucas left November 4th driving to Florida for two weeks. Through the kindness of Helen Dusek, the party of four stayed in Helen’s winter home in Oneca, Florida their first week, and then toured the east coast of Florida their second week taking in all the sights including Disneyland, returning to Cleveland via a different route than going down. This route involved going through mountainous area which I got the impression from Louise was very beautiful but slightly scary.

We had our last meeting on Nov. 23rd after church services. We held elections of officers at this time and the same slate of officers was chosen, namely, president, Mary Zakrajšek; vice-president, Anne Mazar; recording secretary, Katie Sumac; financial secretary, Christine Meyer. Named to the Board of Directors were Marian Dergantz, Mae Weldon and Mamie Pansino.
We gave a donation of $35.00 to our church, St. Cecilia’s and a gift of $10.00 to our parish priest who is ailso our Spiritual Advisor.
We decided not to hold any meetings during December and January because of the uncertainty of the weather. In February, we plan to have a pot luck supper.
We played cards during the social hour and prizes were won by Marian Dergantz in Canastas and a guest Louise Crema in Bridge.
Our hostesses for the event were Mae Weldon and Rose Papatola. Being it was so close to Thanksgiving, we enjoyed delicious pumpkin Pie.

MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN SURPRISE! Chicago branch 2 came through 1C0% I The secretary, Fanika Humar, telephoned each officer, urging them to go to work. The result? EVERY officer enrolled one new member. The cookbook, Woman's Glory - The Kitchen, is on the market now. The first reactions are complimentary. The book is attractive. It contains many new recipes including favorites of several “First Ladies” of America, a feature you will not find in any other cookbook.
The printing took longer than we anticipated because we have a new printer for the book and for ZARJA. It took awhile to get adjusted, but now everything is progressing smoothly.
We are grateful to all who contributed their recipes, to the printshop for their good work, to Mrs Razman-Bucik for her artwork and to Editor. Corinne Leskovar for supervising the printing.
Mrs. Krista Arko, member of branch No. 2 in Chicago, mentioning the Illinois-Indiana State Convention in November’s Zarja writes; “A purpose of a convention is to discuss and resolve problems, debate issues and set new goals for the coming year. At this convention there was a lack of participation on the part of many members. Where was the spirit that this organization poss ssed twenty or thirty years ago? We are still able to accomplish an enormous task such as our chapel in Washington. Let us ks-ep this flame burning!” —Very Good! Yes, let us keep this flame burning! It should burn high especially now in the membership campaign.
Mrs. Arko writes further: “Our leaders have proven their capabilities. Let us members give them our ideas and opinions and then help and support them wholeheartedly. “—The report of sister Arko has greatly interested me. I have not read anything as fundamental in ZARJA for a long time. We appeal to Mrs. Arko to give us her ideas and opinions on how to be more successful and how to find new roads for future progress.
She also mentioned: “Should not an organization such as ours, that caills hersef Slovenian help in preserving our beautiful heritage? ” —May I emphasize that Zveza has always tried to preserve. Slovenian heritage and to instill in our youth a pride for our nationality. This is accomplished by our programs and by establishing a scholarship fund to help young people by recognizing and supporting their academic talents and to further acquaint them with the Slovenian Women’s Union which was pioneered by their mothers and grandmothers, and secondly, through our 4 books: Ameriška Slovenka (1928); Cookbook (1952) and again the newly revised issue of 1971 with Slovenian re-cipes and with the history of the organization included from 1926 to 1971 relating what was accomplished not only for the organization but also for the Slovenian nationality in general; the song book, Zapojmo, issued in thousands of copies to preserve and to keep up the love for Slovenian songs, and finally the book, From Slovenia — To America, with the description of the beautiful country of our birth, its customs, the lives of our pioneers in America and what they have done for themselves and for the Slovenian communities and for this country in general. Whoever reads these books must be proud to be a Slovenian. However, parents and grandparents must be reminded that these books are available and important in preserving the Slovenian heritage.

The highlight of the evening was the presentation of three turkeys to lucky winners: Amelia Cuzella, May Ann Taporis and Mary Perkovich.
On our sick list we have Vickie Tomich who is incapacitated for awhile with a broken arm, Manda Spehar who has been recently hospitalized and Ann Sorak in Mercy Hospital with a massive coronary. Our prayers to all of our ailing members.

Our Branch is delighted to report that our 6th Anniversary Dinner Dance was a success and a pleasurable evening for all who were able to attend.
Sincere thanks and many compliments are due our Chairman, Mrs. Mary Mejac and her Co-Chairman, Mrs. Mary Lou Terselic and all other members who cooperated so willingly in the preparation of the delicious buffet dinner.
We also thank the following for their delicious and generous donations to our lovely dessert table: Matilda Podborsek, Mary Miohelitch, Matilda Terselic, Mara Chokel, Ana Černelč, Ivanka Antolin, Antonia Cigale, Molly Thomas, Jana Bevec and Becky Nagel.
To the silent men in the background we acknowledge with gratitude their willingness to be of assistance when needed.
Music was once again provided by Frank Baloh’s Trio from Joanet-te, Pennsylvania. He not only had us dancing but also serenaded our guests having birthdays and anniversaries. We look forward to seeing you again next year.
Impromptu entertainment added much to our program for the evening.
The guests enjoyed once again the lovely voices of the Antolin sisters and Lydia Bovoc in the rendi-melodies.
Diane Moffitt and her sister, Mary Pavlik supported us loyally by arriving with about 20 guests. Among these were Steve and Edle Larich of Export, Pennsylvania, who are known as “The Smooth Polka Dancers”, and they honored us with an exhibition of their skill and grace.
Also present were Mary Donock and Steve Kigar, “The Polka Swingers” and instructors with the Polish Alliance Association, displayed their talents most generously to the pleasure of the audience.
We were sorry to hear of Mary Lipar’s illness which kept her from joining us. Best wishes are extended to Kay Persons for a quick recovery.
We reluctantly brought our affair to a close and many expressed the wish that next year would find us gathered together again.

Our November meeting was held at the home of Pauline Adamic. We had 115 members present. Katherine Petrich, one of the first members, was present after many years absence. All of us new members were very happy to meet Katherine. Hoping to see you at the meetings in the future, Katherine. I know that was a wonderful surprise for our wonderful hostess, Pauline Adamic.
The meeting was opened with a prayer led by our president Pauline Adamic. Audrey Krulic read the minutes for our secretary Jennie Bole, who was unable to be present. We discussed our Christmas Party which was to be held on December 19th at the home of Jennie Bole.
A thank you note was read from Betty Karas for the- flowers she received from Br. 105, during confinement in the hospital. Betty is slowly gaining her strength back. We missed Betty and her mother Zorka Maisel at the meeting since they never miss a meeting. Hoped to see them both at the Christmas party.
Happy to report Rose Jamnik and Angeline Yevtich are off our sick list and both were at the meeting.
The following ladies gave extra for the kitty; Fulvia Rosa, Katherine Petrich, Angeline Yevtich, Rose Jamnik, Ann Senko, Ann McGee, Mary Zimmerman, Gail Simon, Audrey Krulic and myself. Thanks, ladies.
Alice Sheets won the door prize which was a beautiful candy dish.
I	was taken by surprise when the ladies presented me with a going-away gift. I received a beautiful centerpiece made of amber glass grapes. Really had a hard time holding back the tears. I’ll never forget all the lovely women I met after joining Br. 105. God Bless all of you. Next month will be the last meeting I will attend; we will be moving to New Jersey in February.
Fulvia Rosa, a mail carrier, was honored in October by being awarded a Special Achievement Award Certificate, a pin, and $200.00 for three (3) years of outstanding work. Congratulations, Fulvia.

This column is dedicated to branch No. 1 of Sheboygan, Wis., whose 45th anniversary program my husband, Bob, and I attended in October. The festive occasion held at The Executive Inn was also the Wisconsin State Convention of the S.W.U. The highly successful dinner program was conducted by the toaistmistress, Mrs. Marie Prisland, who was introduced by the branch president, Mrs. Olga Saye. The excellent program included the following speakers: Mrs. Saye, Mrs. Fanika Humar, national secret a r y, Mrs. Marie Floryan, national vice-president, and Mrs. Rose Kramer, state president. National Slovenian son?s were beautifully sung by the branch’s folk singers attractively dressed in native costumes and the instrument alistic Mourin family por-formed, adding much to the enjoyment, especially Paul, their 7 year old soloist.
It was a pleasure for my husband to give an illustrated talk on our trip into. Rome, Israel and Greece and for me to report on the Schol-arslvp program and “Pots and Pans”. Naturally, I solicited a number of recipes as we talked about “Pots and Pans” after the program. All of the following rec:pes are from members of branch No. 1,
FRIED CHICKEN
From Mrs. Olga Saye, president br. No. 1
2	eggs, well beaten 2/3 cup beeT 1 cup flour Vi teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon parsley, cut fine
2 tablespoons oil
1	broiler-fryer chicken quartered or cut into smaller serving pieces.
1	quart oil or melted shortening for frying.
Combine eggs, beer. With rotary beater slowly beat in flour, salt, parsley and 2 tablespoons oil until batter is smooth. Dip chicken into batter coating completely and draining off excess. Drop into oil heated to 375 degrees. Deep fry 15 to 20 minutes or until done turning pieces frequently until uniformly browned. (Chicken can also be fried until
golden brown then placed in cake or jelly-roll pan and bake for 35 minutes in preheated 350 degree oven). This beer batter serves equally well for shrimp. Just add Vi teaspoon ground ginger. It will coat 2 pounds of large shelled shrimp to serve twelve. Olga also suggests: Wrap a strip of bacon around cut pieces of rabbit and bake (nice red color).
To ksep fat to use again: clarify with raw potato (4 slices to 1 quart). When fat bubbles, strain into jar or can through 2 or 3 thicknesses of cheesecloth, over wire strainer removing potato. Krep in a cool place in light-proof, tight, covered container.
PUMPKIN TORTE
From Mrs. Anna Matzdorf
1 cup butter or oleo
1 cup flour Vi cup sugar
Mix and pat in a 9x13 pan. Bake 10-15 minutes at 375 degrees until brown. Cool.
2 packages Whip and Chill (vanilla flavor)
2/3 cup milk
1 large can pumpkin spiced mix Whip Whip and Chill and milk until creamy. Add pumpkin spiced mix, blend well and pour over cooled crust. Chill until set. When ready to serve cover with Dream Whip, Cool Whip or whipping cream.
Note: Don’t whip the Whip and Chill to much or it will be lumpy in the pumpkin mixture.
BAKED BREAD DOUGHNUTS
From Mrs. Anna Matzdorf
Vi cup warm water 1 ounce yeast Vi cup sugar
1	cup scalded milk
1	teaspoon salt 3/4 cup shortening Vi cup mashed potatoes
1 teaspoon vanilla or lemon flavoring
2 eggs, beaten
5 cups sifted flour Place in a warm bowl the warm water and yeast. Stir until dissolved. Combine in a large bowl, sugar, scalded milk, ealt, shortening and mashed potatoes. Stir until sugar is dissolved. Cool to lukewarm. Add to yeast mixture. Mix well. Add flavoring and eggs. Mix well. Add 3 cups sifted flour and mix until smooth then add 2 more cups of flour (about). Mix well. Turn onto floured board, cover with bowl and let rest 10 minutes then knead until smooth and velvety — about 10 minutes. Place in a greased bowl. Brush top with oil. Cover and let rise until double in bulk, about 1
hour. Punch down. Turn onto floured board. Cover and let rest for 10 minutes. Roll out Vi inch thick. Cut with doughnut cutter. Place on greased baking sheets. Let rise in warm place 50 to 60 minutes. Bake at 425 degress — 10 to 12 minutes. Cool slightly on racks. Glaze with powder sugar graze.
To glaze: Add 1/3 cup boiling water gradually to 1 cup confectioners’ sugar. Mix thoroughly. Dip warm doughnuts into the warm glaize.
HONEYBEAR BROWNIES
From Mrs. Victoria Suppanchiek
1/3 cup butter or margarine 3/4 cup sugar Vi cup honey
2	teaspoons vanilla
2 eggs
Vi cup all- purpose flour Vi teaspoon salt 1/3 cup cocoa 1 cup chopped walnuts Cream butter or margarine and sugar in a small mixing bowl, blend in honey and vanilla. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Combine flour, salt and cocoa; gradually add to creamed mixture. Stir in nuts. Pour into a greased 9x9x2 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool. Frost with Creamy Brownie Frosting. 16 brownies.
Creamy Brownie Frosting:
3 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons cocoa 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup confectioner’s sugar 1 tablespoon milk
1 tablespoon honey
Cream butter and cocoa in small mixer bowl, add vanilla and sugar. Blend in milk and honey, beat until mixture reaches spreading consistency.
GARDEN MACARONI SALAD

2 cups cooked macaroni
Vi cup chopped sweet pickles
Vi cup diced carrots
Vi cup chopped green pepper
1	teaspoon salt
Vi teaspoon pepper
Vi cup salad dressing
Vi cup 9liced radishes
4 sliced hard-cooked eggs Combine macar o n i, vegetables,
pickles and seasoning. Then fold in salad dressing and eggs. Chill and serve on crisp lettuce.

Do prvega junija, ko poteče rok sedajni kampanji za nove članice, ne bo miru. Vsak mesec bom opominjala Zvezine odbornice naj storijo svojo dolžnost v kampanji. Naše geslo je: VSAKA ODBORNICA — ENO NOVO ČLANICO! Z odbornicami mislim predsednico, podpredsednico, tajnico, blagajničarko, zapisnikarco, vse tri nadzornice in rediteljico, da vsaka vpiše eno novo članico jih bo takoj 800. Torej dekleta, na delo! Zdaj velja postaviti se! Čikaška podružnica je že, stoprocen-tna. Katera ji bo sledila?
SPOMINI
Nad 60 let je že poteklo odkar sem stopila na ameriška tla. Vzljubila sem novo domovino Ameriko, košček srca pa je ostal v mojem rojstnem kraju, katerega obiskala sem sedemkrat. Trg Rečica v Savijnski dolini je nami še vedno najlepši kraj na svetu.
Ivan Zorman, slovenski-ameriški pesnik in nepozabni prijatelj je krasno spesnil spomine na domovino, ljub in svst.
Njegovi stihi veljajo vs:m našim rojakom ki jim je spomni na domovino. Njegovi stihi veljajo vsem našim rojakom, ki jim je spomin na domovino, ljub in svet.
MISLI NA DOMOVINO
Odjadrala je dolga vrsta let, odkar zapustil sem slovenski 6vet, odkar po lokah cvetnih sem skakljal, brezskrbno z vaško dcco se igral.
Dokaj prijazna so mi tuja tla, dobrot odpirajo mi več kot zla četudi dušo spremljajo skrbi, ki včasih vstvarjajo mi grenke dni.
Prisrčno sprejme tod me domačin, obujam z njim na lepi dom spomin; zamrl še ni slovenske pesmi glas, s ponosom še navdaja nas njen kras.
A ko nad mesto dahne tiha noč, neseča s sabo neumljivo moč, takrat v bolesti sladki se topim, po čudo lepi zemlji hrepenim.
Pred se razgrinja polja čar, pozdravlja ga nebesni zlati žar; pri čredi zala deklica stoji in peva, da odmeva do vasi.
Čudesa naših sončnih zrem višav,
milino vživam rožnatih nižav.....
Takrat v očesu solza zaigra, da valovitim željam duška da.
In ko tako preroma duh naš raj, ljubezen mu obljubljam vekomaj; hvaležne bom spomine nanj gojil, in z njimi čustveno srce pojil.
G. John Badovinac, gl. tajnik Hrvatske Bratske Za-jsdnice, ki ima 100,000 članstva, je izvrsten zgodovinar. Med opisom zgodovine svoje organizacije je omenil, da je leta 1897 bila izvoljena Julija Bichelmayer kot prva ženska konvenčna delegatka. Ko je gospa Julija dospela na konvencijo je predsednik imenoval odbor treh delegatov, ki so prvo žensko delegatko spremili v dvorano t.er jo peljali na oder kjer jo je predsednik postavil na svojo desno stran. V pozdrav so ji poklonili velik šopek cvetlic. Ko je bila delegaciji predstavljena so vsi delegati vstali ter navdušeno vzklikali: ŽIVELE HRVATICE!
Pri branju te zgodbine sem se spomnila dogodkov na K.S.K.J. konvenciji vršeči se leta 1923 v Clevelandu. Takrat smo ženske prvikrat smele zastopati svoja društva na konvenciji. Bilo nas j,e 39 po številu čisto število kot ima ameriška ustava podpisov — je točno ugotovil Ivan Zupan, tedajni urednik GLASILA K.S.K.J.
Joseph Zalar, Jed noti n glavni tajnik je izposloval, da je konvencija dodala glavnemu odboru še eno podpredsedniško mesto, da bi ženske delegatke imele priliko priti v glavni odbor. Mene je zadela čast biti imenovana za ta urad. Poleg mene je nominacijo sprejelo še 12 delegatov. Pri prvem glasovanju sem prejela večino glasov in Joseph Klepec, takratni urednik Ame-rikanskega Slovenca in delegat iz Jolieta, ki je za menoj prejel največ glasov je pvedlegal naj se me enoglasno izvoli, kar se je zgodilo. MJ.tt Jerman, prvi gl. podpredsednik mi je poklonil rdečo vrtnico v spomin na ta dogodek. Rožo sem vložila med dva lista v moji knjigi, kjer je še danes.
Matta Jermana, zelo priljubljenega odbornika ter izvrstnega, po vsej Coloradi poznanega muzikanta, že dolgo vrsto let krije ameriška zemljica. Blag mu spomin!

PODOKNICA
Prijateljica je pravila o vtisih, ki jih je dobila na obisku v rodni domovini. Najbolj ji je ugajalo to, da so neki večer prijatelji prišli pod njeno okno prepevat. Ker so bili na “družbeno — vzgojni mitingi”, kjer je na mizi stal liter vina so nekoliko zategnjeno peli tisto: “Koso faantje prooti vaasi šliiii, leejpe peeesmi so pree-peeeevali ”
NAROBE SVET

Na pragu novega leta delamo načrte za prihodnost ter pregledujemo uspehe in neuspehe minulega leta.
Šele mesec dni poteka naša kampanja in že se je nabralo lep kup rožastih papirjev na pisalni mizi — saj jih vse poznate; posebno dobro jih pozna nekaj zelo aktivnih odbornic — to so listine za nove članice, ki kar lepo prihajajo. Slišala sem namigovanje, da nas mislijo nekatere podružnice presenetiti. Le na dan s presenečenji!
Lepa slovenska čednost nam narekuje, da ne govorimo o sebi in svojih zaslugah. Dovolite mi, da jo prelomim samo toliko, da vam naznanim veselo novico: Imamo PRVO PODRUŽNICO, ki je izpolnila prvo stopnjo tekmovanja tekoče članske kampanje! Vse odbornice podružnice št. 2 v Chioagu so do seje dne 9. decembra skupno vpisale 23 novih članov in članic po sledečem redu: Krista Arko eno B članico; Lillian Putzel eno B; Jennie Puhek eno B; Luba Troha eno B in eno Jr.; Mary Krapenc dve B; Anna Zorko eno Jr.; Nežka Gaber dve B; Elizabeth Zefran dve B; Mary Muller eno B; Corinne Leskovar eno A in tri Jr. ter Fanika Humar dve B in štiri Jr. S ponosom se prištevam delu celote te chikaške podružnice! Vsem odbornicam iskreno čestitam in želim, da bi nas prvi uspeh ne uspaval ter bi šestmesečno tekmovanje zaključile z večmestnimi številkama!
Podobnih sklepov pričakujemo tudi od vshod-nih in zahodnih vetrov, kjer delujejo naše podružnice.
Nastopila je nova doba in potreba po združevanju v narodne skupine. Ljudje vseh slojev hočejo pripadati neki skupnosti. Narodna zavest je postala tudi v pisani Ameriki velika moda. Tisti, ki nimajo korenin doma, snujejo komune in v njih iščejo vezi do soljudi. Naše potrebe se spreminjajo a ena otsane vedno živa: Potrebujemo eden drugega! Skrbi nas kdo nas bo pokopal, še prej: kdo nam bo stal ob strani v težavah, starosti; še veseliti se človek ne more sam! V vseh vladnih, političnih in kulturnih krogih povdarjajo pomembnost narodnostnih skupnosti. Sociologi so dognali, da so najbolj uspešni in plodni tisti državljani, ki imajo trdno vez v družini in svojih prednikih. Danes, ko naši državniki iščejo stike 7- vsem svetom, se trudijo vspotsaviti vezi med
ljudmi in se v Beli hiši učijo celo kitajščine, se uveljavalja tudi naš star pregovor: Koliko jezikov znaš, toliko mož veljaš. Ta dejstva nam nalagajo veliko večjo pomembnost obstanka. Kdo drug, če ne me žene, naj ohranja naše lepe narodne navade, naš jezik, našo pesem in vsa kulturna izročila prihodnim rodovom!
Vsem novo ali ponovno izvoljenim odbornicam kličem prisrčno dobrodošlico v novem letu! Želim, da bi se dobro počutile pri izvrševanju danih dolžnosti. Ne ustrašite se težav, ki pridejo med letom. Težave so del našega življenja pa tudi pot do uspehov, še nov človek se ne rodi brez bolčin. Ne oklevajte izraziti svojega nezadovoljstva, tudi zadovoljnosti ne obdržite same zase! Vsako sodelovanje bo dobrodošlo in bo poživljalo naše skupno delo, dvigalo rast in utrajalo vezi med nami, da bomo dočakale našo zlato obletnico Slovenske ženske zveze močne “kakor zid in skala”!
Med uspehe minulega leta smemo vsekakor šteti koncert Slov. ženske zveze v Clevelandu, ki se je vršil v nedeljo, dne 28. novembra. Ženski zbor Dawn, katerega vodi odlični strokovnjak g. Ing. Franček Gorenšek, me je v resnici presenetil. Pred nabito polno Reharjevo dvorano hvaležnih poslušalcev, so se vrstile lepe slovenske narodne in umetne pesmi. Soli, dueti, terceti skratka vse nas je navduševalo. Pravi dar božji je cela Go-renškova družina od moža dirigenta, žene pevke, hčerkine lepe spremljave na klavirju in sina po-siušalaca, ki mi je tako ponosno povedal: “Ali ni moja sestra ljubka”? Z vsem srcem sem mu pritrdila. Občudovala sem prav vse in si mislila: Koliko truda so vložili vsi sodelujoči, da so nam pripravili to lepo popoldne! Vsakdo, ki je kdaj sodeloval na podobnih koncertih, ve, kako je utrudljivo izvesti cel vokalni koncert. Mislila sem, da bom po koncertu našla vse te požrtvovalne žene v garderobi in jih tako skupaj vse še enkrat pozdravila in jim čestitala. Samo nekaj besed s sosednimi poslučalci in že sem se namerila proti garderobi, a glej: naše žene so neuničljive! Vse so bile ne $amo preoblečene, ampak so že hitele streči poslušalcem s toplo večerjo in se še mimogrede opravičelave za svojo zaposlenost. To je pa naš duh, sem rekla ponosna svojemu možu! Čestitam vam vsem in vsaki posebej vrle cleve-lendčanke! Gospodu Ing. Gorenšku prisrčna hvala in čestitke za ves trud, ki ga ni bilo malo in se ne da poplačati! Bog vas živi!

NOSILCI POSLANICE
Prav gotovo ste že slišali o Niagarskih slapovih. Kako nekaj mogočnega je to. Tako se zdi kakor da bi bil en sam čudež pred vami. To se vrši že leta in leta.
V	teh 6lapovih je dovolj moči, da bi razsvetlili vse mesto New York. Vendar še ene žarnice ne more prižgati, če nihče te moči ne porabi in pravilno usmeri. Prav tako pravijo, da je na teksnskih poljih dovolj olja, da bi gnalo vse naše ladje po vssh morjih sveta. Vendar ne more niti ene svetilke prižgati, dokler nekdo ne prinese tega olja do te svetilke. Sonce ima dovolj svetlobe, da bi lahko razsvetilo veliko več svetov kakor je naš, vendar še v našo sobico ne more posijati, če nihče ne potegne zavese.
Bog je v svoji veliki dobroti poskrbel za zdravila za težave v katerih se nahaja današnji svet. Potrebna navodila je dal in jih še daje po katoliški cerkvi. Toda svet ne bo imel nič od tega in mu ne bo nič koristilo, če ne bo nekoga, ki bo prinesel veselo vest in zdravilo bolnemu človeštvu. Le poglejmo v kakšnih težavah je

Novo Leto je pred nami. Naj prinese vsem našim čitateljicam sreče, zadovoljstva in zdravja, da bomo mogle vsaka po svoje opravljati svoja poklicna dela.
“Penny Social”, ki smo ga imeli 12. novembra je zelo lepo izpadel. Preko sto članic in njihovih prijateljic je napolnilo dvorano pod cerkvijo do zadnjega kotička. Veliko lepih dobitkov je bilo darovanih in mnogim se je sreča nasmejala. Najlepša hvala vsem, ki so se tega večera udeležili, vsem, ki so prinesli darila in vsem v odboru, ki so tako neumorno delali. Hvala tudi tistim blagim članicam, ki niso mogle priti na prireditev, pa so se pismeno in z darili odzvale na povabilo. Tako številne udeležbe in toliko odgovorov še nismo nikoli prej imeli. Zato je tudi naš dibiček bil tako lep, kot že dolgo ne. Spet smo pokazale kaj dobra volja in medsebojna pomoč lahko dosežeta v poncs vsem članicam in v prid naši organizaciji.
Decembra smo imeli volitve in božičnico za naše otroke. O teh dogodkih bomo drugič poročali.
Skorajšno okrevanje želimo dr. Ludviku Leskovarju. Težko operacijo je prestal, zdaj mu pa naj Bog da milost, da bo dobil vse svoje moči nazaj.

svet danes. Ali je cerkev odpovedala? Ali smo mi odpovedali cerkvi? Ali gledamo na polnost vere kot dragoceno dediščino, kot našo izključno pravico?
Posedovati resnico pomeni prevzeti odgovornost posredovati resnico tudi drugim. Aii naj to pomenj naj gremo na vogale ulic in začnemo pridigat. Ali to pomeni, da gremo na trg ali trgovine in se postavimo na zaboj in začnemo govoriti o Bogu in veri. Da in ne. Oboje je prav zaprav potrebno. Naša prva dolžnost je osebna. Najprej moramo sami biti tako trdno prepričani o resnicah svete vere, da živino po veri pod vsemi pogoji tudi takrat ko je teško. Ne smemo biti polovičarski. Sedaj ob začetku leta kakor vedno moramo reči Gospodu “Tukaj sem, napravi z menoj kar hočeš.” Še le ko bodo tako prežeti z vero v dnevnem življenju bodo lahko postali orodje za posredovanje resnice drugim.
Da to lahko storimo moramo poznati svojo vero. Samo katekizemski odgovori niso dovolj. Ker ne poznamo dovolj svoje vere se bojimo o njej govoriti in tako zanemarjamo veliko nalogo, ki nam jo daje Gospod: Siriti božje kraljestvo. Vera pride po poslušanju, ne sama od sebe. Svet potrebuje zdravila vere in mu ga lahko posredujemo.
SREČNO NOVO LETO

Čeprav se že dalje časa nahajam v Nursing home, Burr Oak v Blue Island, 111, vendar kot dolgoletna članica št. 2 vedno zasledujem delo in uspehe naše Zveze. Izredno ssm ponosna na vse naše glavne odbornice in od podružnic. Našo priljubljeno Zarjo vedno težko čakam, saj nam nudi mnogo zanimivega branja. Seveda zelo pogrešamo našo na vse strani prijazno Mrs. Albino Novak, ki se sedaj veseli v nebesih z Marijo.
Miss M. Drassler, ki je bila z vami na posvetitvi slovenske kapele, mi je o vsem lepo poročala, kako je bi-
lo	vse krasno pripravljeno, da take slovesnosti še ni videla. Kako mogočno so donele Marijine pesmi pri slovenski sv. maši v ogromni narodni katedrali. Pokazala mi je angleški list, ki o vsem lspo poročal.
Čast Bogu in Brezjanski Mariji Pomagaj in zahvala Vam glavne odbornice S.Ž.Z., naši pok. Albini Novak in vsem podružnicam, ki so pridno delale, da so zbrale potrebno vsoto za ta slovenski spomenik v ameriški prestolici. Pri nas v Chicagu so koražno delale in vzpodbujala, prva je bila Albina, ki je razposlala ogromno pisem, katerega sem z veseljem pokazala naši supervisor Mrs. Oncell, ki je prec prispevala, čeprav ni naše narodnosti. Res vsa čast naši Zvezi, da je dala pobudo za brezjansko kapela v največji cerkvi našega gl. mesta. Enako tudi Mrs. Turek, naši gl. preds., ki je s soprogom pridno zbirala prispevke.
Mali slovesnki narod ne bo nikoli pozabljen v Ameriki, dokler bo stala ta mogočna cerkev. S ponosom pokažem Spominsko knjigo vsem, ki
me obiščejo, posebno ladies od fare Sv. Benedikta, katerim sem pokazala poslanico predsednika Nixona ter slike naših odbornic v tej knjigi, ki mi jo je poslala Liz Žefran. Sedaj tudi drugim romarjem v Washington D.C., naročam, da ob obisku katedrale ne pozabijo obiskati tudi našo krasno slovensko kapelo. Prosila sem jih naj izročijo Mariji Pomagaj moj srčni pozdr&v.

To leto, kakor sedaj kaže bo pa nam zima res prikrajšana. Smo tik pred Božičem ko to pišem, pa nimamo še nič posebnega mraza. Na dan naše seje, 7. dec. je bilo kar gorko, zato so se članice v velikem številu udeležile.
V tem času so več ali majn bolane naše sestre: Mrs .Mikov,ec, Mrs. Kog, Mrs. Sajevec, Mrs. Smrdel., Mrs. Stefančič in Mrs. Vidovič.
Kakor vidite je jih kar precej. Molimo za nje, da jim čimprej da Bog zdravja.
Precej denarja smo zbrale na seji, kakor vsako leto za Mavec šolo.
Drugo leto 1972 bo naše društvo praznovalo 45 letnico in to v jeseni meseca oktobra. Kar bom bolj natančno poročala še pozneje.
Nato se začne volivni razvoj: za predsednco je sedaj prevzela Paula Krall, vse druge odbornice smo ostale po starem.
Tudi, vse drugo kar smo imele zadnja leta odobreno, bo ostalo še tako kot je bilo.
V Klub društev so izvoljene: Rozi Rogers in Fannie Eržen. Za pegled
nadzornice, Mrs.- F. Globokar, Mrs. Plut in Mrs. Fakult. Za delniško sejo, Mrs. Stražišar, Mrs. Iskra in Mrs. Bajec.
Po seji smo imele božičnico v lepo okrašeni dvorani, Iti nam jo je pripravil Joe Petrič. Obhajale smo tudi
2	mesečno godovanje. Mnogo so sestre prinesle v ta namen. Imena teh so Mrs. Stražišar (Arrowhead), Frances Eržen, Jennie Mihela, Mrs. Čebuli, Mrs. Pančur, Mrs. Ozanic, Mrs. Miei Globokar, Mrs. Frances Globokar, Mrs. Krai, Mrs. Plut, Mrs. Fit-zum, Mrs. Miller in Mrs. Zupirman.
V denarju so pa darovale sled-eče v društveno blagajno: Sestre Ozanic, Koljat, Iskra, Ukman, Jakobs in v gud tajm blagajno so darovale 6estre Rupert, Kovač, Bubnič, P. Cesar, Ukman in Stana Gril.
V solnči kotiček so darovale sestre Klemenčič, Kušar, Tomarek, Dra-golic, in Bubnič.
Naj vam Bog povrne, ker ste toliko darovale, da bi bile zdrave, sr£Č-ne in zadovoljne. Posebno vam želim veselo novo leto, da bi se zopet v takem lepem številu zbrale v novem letu - prvi torek vsaki mesec. Sprejmite moj novoletni pozdrav. Vaša zapiisnikarca, A. SUSTAR

Leto je hitro prišlo okrog in že smo začeli Nove Leto 1972. Za katere je bilo leto srečno, če je bilo zdravje in nekateri se spominjajo raznih veselih dogodkov v svojih družinah. Naj bi ljubi Bog ohranil vse članice in njih družine, kakor tudi naše znance in prijatelje v ljubem zdravju in onim, ki se pa zdravijo, da se čimprej popolnoma pozdravijo.
Voščilne kartice za ozdravljenje članic so bile podpisane od navzočih članic in sicer za Frances Sega, Mary Valentich in Mary Gerl. Vse so že dolgoletne članice. Dalje željo za okrevanje tudi Ludviku Leskovar, soprogu naše urednice, Corinne, ki je bolan že vač tednov in se je moral podvreči težki operaciji. Bog daj, da čimprej okreva in družina ponov-no skupaj uživa zadovoljstvo in veselje v tem Novem Letu. (Iskrena hvala za prisrčna voščila. Hirala Pogu, Lud je operacijo dobro prestal, je doma in se dosti boljše počuti. Ured.)
V	mesecu novembru smo praznovale ime Katarine, ker je bilo več članic s tem imenom bolnih, se niso v polnem številu udeležile, toda posebej počaščena je bila pa Katerine Kness, sestra naše nadzornice Theresa Marentioh. V decembru na seji, so bile počaščene članice z imenom , Barbara.

Ko pišem to poročilo se pripravlja na šolski oddih v Evropo starejši sin Millie Pucel, kjer bo preživel Božične počitnice med šolskim oddihom iz Lewis College. V Franciji bo obiskal brata Filipa, ki tem študira, in oba bosta teden med Božičnim časom preživela Slovenski Božič v Sloveniji pri sorodnikih. Želimo, da se ima Krist lepo v domovini starih starišev, katero prvič obiskuje.
Letni kard party vseh društev za cerkev pod vodstvom Olge Ancel, je prinesel čistega dobička $2,149.36. Hvala vsem ki so pomagale in prinesle dobitke ter prodajale knjižice.

JOSEPHINE ERJAVEC

Danes 27. novembra je dobila telefonski klic naša tajnica, Stella Dancull, da je sin bil v automobil-ski nesreči, žena je ubita, ostali so penesrečeni; to je sin star 30 let, hčerka in sinaha, to je mama od umrle žene Dancull, ki živijo v Minneapolis, Minnesota. Več o tem izvemo ko se vrneta nazaj Stella in Micky. Naše sožalje vsem!
Naša podr. ima sejo in volitev ter Božičnico; brez tajnice ne bo vse rešeno, bo pa pozneje.
Dne 28. nov. sta obhaja 50 letnico poroke naša članica Ančka in soprog John Pelčič. Čestitamo in želimo zdravje, odkar je Ančka imela kap, se je kar dobro pozdravila. Drugič ho kaj več veselih novic.
Veselo novo leto vsem po širni Ameriki in čez morje.

Danes Vam bom pa potožila kako mi je bilo spet par dni hudo pa ne zaradi smrti ali kake druge nesreče, ampak naš dragi in nepozabni dom smo prodali.
Pisala 6em že, da so moji otroci razkropleni po treh državah, jaz pa sama v Aurora, stara 85 let, in to je bilo za mene preveč. Zato sem v domu za ostarele, kjer sem kar zadovoljna. Pravim, da smo prodali naš dom. Ne morem Vam povedati in ne popisati kako sem se počutila, ko sem gledala ko so nosili ven iz hiše in prodajali kar smo mi tako težko skupaj spravili! Mislila sem, da mi bo srce počilo od žalosti.
Spraznili so dom, kjer so bili moji ljubljeni otroci rojeni in vzgojeni, kjer sem morala trdo delati od zore do trdne noči, kjer smo imeli lepe in žalostne dneve, kjer smo peli in
jokali, kjer so otroci skakali in nagajali, pa tudi ubogali. Ko so dorasli, jih je pa Stric Sam poklical v drugo svetovno vojno, ko so priš-
li	nazaj in dovršili univerze, tedaj se je pa začelo.
Je bilo: Mami. good-bye! In vsak je šel za svojim poklicem. Doma res nimamo več, moram pa biti hvaležna Bogu da vsaj pošteno živijo ih, da se je z domom vse tako is-teklo!
Z Bogom moj dragi in nepozabni dom! Naj bo sreča s teboj in Mr. Buckley, ki ste ga kupili!
Pred par tedni sem bila v Jolietu v farni dvorani. In prav tisti dan so č.g. Mskr. Butala kazali film od blagoslovitve Slovenske Kap?Ie v Washingtonu, D. C. O., kako lep oltar s podobo Marije Pomagaj! Film pokaže lepe zanimivosti iz glavnega mesta Amerike, katere sem tudi jaz gledala in občudovala ko sem bila tam še v zadnji svetovni vojni, ko je hči živela t9m, njen mož pa je bil poslan v Evropo kot Finance Officer.
Zdaj pa še malo kako smo tukaj. Pred par tedni so bili napravili tukaj bazar ki je prav dobro uspel. Načelnica Mrs. Traub je vse vesela pripovedovala, do so dobili čer $2000. Ljudje so dosti darovali tu-kajšne ženske so pa naredile dosti ročnih del. In to naj jim bo v zahvalo, ker so tako dobri in lepo skrbijo za nas ostarele. Jaz jim iz srca privoščim!
So božični prazniki že za nami, zato voščim Srečno novo leto vsem članicam in njih družinam in vsem ki berejo Zarjo.

Drage članice naše podružnice: po večini ste že vse plačale mesečnino za Zvezo za 1971, samo nekatere, niste poslale tistega izvanrednega dolarja, katerega vsako leto plačamo, da imamo za naše stroške, zato prosim, da bi še tisto poravnale.
Do sedaj smo tukaj imeli zelo lepo vreme, seveda starka zima se hitro približuje, ker smo že blizu Božiča ko pišem te vrstice.
Zelo smo veseli, da se zdravje dobro povrača možem dveh naših članic, prvi je Mr. Anton Kostelec, ki je ob enem tudi brat mojega moža, drugi je Mr. Martin Mootz, oba doma iz Belokrajne.
Hudo je bil bolan tudi Mr. Frank Anžiček, in tudi njemu se je dobro zdravje povrnilo kar jim vsem iz srca želimo.
Članica Mary Gergich je bila na obisku v New Mexico pri hčerki
Mary Ann in zetu David Žagar, kjer je zet zaposlen v važni državni službi. Imajo tudi tri sinčke. Ko se je Mary vrnila domov so jih iz New Yorka pa obiskali hčerka Dolores in zet Jerome Lysp.ught z malo hčerkico in so se dobro imeli pri očetu in mamici.
26. nov. se je zgodila strašna nesreča, ko je pri delu, ko je stroj po-pravlal, dobesedno do smrti sitroj strl našega rojaka in župljana sv. Družine, 53 let starega Johna P. Schvab, ki zapušča žalujočo ženo in hčer, tri vnuke, dva brata in dve sestri in več bratrancev in sorodnikov, eden izmed teh je tudi Father
Allan Schwaub v Canon City, Colorado. Vsem ostalim iskreno sožalje, pokojnemu pa naj sveti večna luč.
Srčno želim, da bi se do kraja pozdravile Angela Škrjanec in Frances Simonich iz Pusblo, Colo., in naša sorodnica Mary Kočevar v Steelton, Pa. In vsem drugim bolehnim članicam, najlepši pozdrav. Pozdrav tudi Frances Kranjc v Aurori ker tudi v Kansas City radi vaše dopise beremo, in Mrs. Ann Pachak v Pueblo, Colo.

Ker imamo seje vsake 3 mesece, nimam veliko za poročati. Srečne smo, ker ni nobena članica umrla to leto. Želim vsem bolnim članicam ljubo ndravje in vabim čla, da se udeležite januarske seje. Lep pozdrav.

“Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you!” On January I we celebrate the birthday a New Year. Each one of us throughout the year will celebrate a New Year —a birthday. As the New Year is a special holiday, a birthday is a favorite holiday.
Ages ago no one celebrated birthdays because there was no calendar. After the scientists of ancient Egypt and Babylonia began to study the sky a calendar was invented. Ancient Egyptians were the first to honor birthdays with celebrations, with only the pharoah or king so honored.
The people of Iran copied the Egyptian custom of celebrat i n g birthdays with an outdoor feast resembling our cookouts. Then the Greeks picked up the custom by honoring the birthdays of gods. In Italy Roman Emperors celebrated their birthdays as public holidays.
In those ancient lands, the women and children were not thought important enough to have birthday parties. The day of a child’s birth and a few days after were the time of celebration when the child would be given a name, good luck charms and good wishes.
Most early peoples belived that a special spirit watched over a child all his lifetime. A good spirit who watched over a baby became the fairy godmother After the coming °f Christianity, children had read godparents, who promised to watch over a baby.
As Christianity spread throughout the world December 25 was made a Holy day to honor the birthday °f the Christ Child. Christmas became one of the biggest birthday celebrations in the whole world. More attention was given to children’s birthdays and records were kept. And each child had his own Patron saint to whom he prayed. Then and now a patron saint is honored by going to church and giv-•ng Him thanks. Relatives, godparents and friends bring presents and greeting?. The rest of the day is filled with fun and the name day child is free from all work, chooses his favorite foods and invites his favorite friends.
Towns, cities, even nations have
patron saints, too. Celebrated as a holiday St. Patrick is the patron of Ireland, Saint Catherine of France, St. John the Baptist of French Canada, Mexico, Central and South America. Slovenia and Croatia hold St. Joseph very dearly and honor him with a holiday.
In the absence of a Saint countries celebrate birthdays. The United States’ is on July 4, while Canada’s Dominion Day is on July 1.
Ancient people believed thait cakes and candles had magic powers, making wishes come true and driving away evil spirits. A birthday wish must never be spoken and if you blow out all the candles with one puff, your wish will come true. Another belief was that good wishes brought good fortune. Then through the years people began writing thedr greetings. With the invention of printing cards with verses were received. There was even greater magic when gifts came with the greetings.
The birthday story began with the pharaohs and emperors. It continues today among the rich and poor,
young and old who enjoy similar birthday customs all over the world.
At the turn of the century two American sisters, Mildred and Patty Hill wrote the “Happy Birthday” song which has been adopted by every nation. Often another verse is sung with the words: May the dear Lord bless you.
For the New Year or for your birthday here is my wish:
“I do not wish you joy without a sorrow Nor endless day without the healing dark,
Nor brilliant sun without the restful shadow,
Nor tides that never turn against your bark.
I wish you love, strength, and faith, and wisdom,
Goods, gold enough to help some needy one,
I wish you songs, but also blessed silence,
And God’s sweet peace when every day is done.”
