From 1892 to 1954, Ellis Island was the site of the U.S. Immigration station where over 12 million people entered the United States. Spanning 27 acres, Ellis Island once supported 29 buildings. Now the only portion open to the public is the main building, which has been fully restored and converted into a U.S. Immigration Museum. Many Americans can trace their history to Ellis Island. “We came to America, either ourselves or in the persons of our ancestors, to better the ideals of men, to make them see finer things than they had seen before, to get rid of things that divide, and to make sure of the things that unite.” (Woodrow Wilson). . She continues to observe her independence with celebration. Yearly, people • gather to march in parades, view spectacular fireworks, and reunite with family and friends. The Fourth of July has grown into a grand celebration. In 1824, the first organized citizen procession celebrating July 4lh occurred. In later years, more celebrations were created. By the 19th century, citizens chose from a variety of programs and events to attend. Average citizens and presidents take time to celebrate this amazing event. In 1962, a group of 200 people gathered to honor Elbridge Gerry, who was the only signer of the Declaration of Independence buried in Washington. “Our flag is our national ensign, pure and simple. Now the courts have spoken We are wrong in what we do, We can’t say we’re under God We might offend a few. Our kids can’t pray in school We can’t pray at football games, I don’t bow my head in prayer I hang it down in shame. It hadn’t been that long ago On a bright September morning, When our world turned upside down It could have been a warning. Salute to our Armed Forces by RUDY FLIS Had a great time golfing this day with people in my trade. I even won some money, as poor a golfer as I am. Came home and sat outside and discussed the day’s events with my wife, Therese. She told me about a news story on the evening national news, on channel 5 in Cleveland on June 16. It goes like this: High school students at a school in the east were communicating with our fighting men and women in combat. Some of the veterans even took the time to visit these students upon their return. The letters and the visits put an air of awe and respect throughout the class, so much so, they wanted to put on a play based on letters from their military pen pals to honor them. A theater group came forward when they heard about it and offered their theater for the class to put on their special play, and they did. Some of the veterans who had written letters and returned home, were in the audience and their letters were read as were some from those who would not return. The play was a success. | God Bless this special class and our fighting men and women and may God Bless i America. And nowhere is this more true than in the founding and history of our republic. Indeed, the Founding Fathers felt obligated to spell out their reasons for declaring independence from England, out of what Thomas Jefferson called a “decent respect to the opinions of mankind.” Other nations have come into existence as realms of a monarch or conqueror or as aggregations of people with a common culture or language. But the United States proclaimed its existence in words, even before it had clearly defined borders or a formally constituted government. We are a nation defined not by blood or soil but by ideas. The Declaration asserted the independence of the Colonies but it did not define what territory they included. In the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848, the United States obtained from Mexico our largest state, California. The United States has gone on to become the world’s most productive and prosperous economy through the practical utilization of ideas. The discovery, which was completely unexpected, was made around the New Year in NUK by a Slovenian physicist Dr. Stanislav Južnič. The priceless 440-year-old work was once the property of the Ljubljana Jesuits. It is among the most precious books in the world, but its find also sheds new light on the astronomical and other accomplishments of our ancestors. It was precisely this book by Copernicus that put a characteristic stamp on modem science, and its presence in Ljubljana shows again that its inhabitants at the time were active supporters of the early development of the mathematical sciences. The book found in Ljubljana is bound in well-preseryed white vellum. To bind the inside of both covers two manuscripts of as yet unknown origin were used. At the time when the ownership inscription in it was made, in 1754, Baron Bernard Ferdinand Erberg of the Dol pri Ljubljana Mansion Was a professor of mathematics and philosophy at Ljubljana colleges. In the spirit of the reforms, Proposed by Maria Theresa, he acquired many new books and over 50 pieces of experimental equipment for instruction at the Jesuit College. In many respects Erberg became a founder of modem methods in teaching exact science. The book was printed in Basel, Switzerland on watermarked paper exhibiting the same marks as other copies held elsewhere. After a fire in 1774, only around a thousand books survived from the former Jesuit college library at St. Jacob’s in Ljubljana. In the following year around one half of the books were catalogues with large numbers placed on their front covers. NUK keeps many items not included in this catalogue bearing the Ljubljana Jesuits’ ownership inscription on the front cover, including the precious second edition of Copernicus. A good century ago the Tuijak Mansion once standing on the site of today’s NUK was home to probably the best baroque library in Europe, the treasures of the Turjak library were later taken abroad, but they bear witness to an exceptional love for books in Ljubljana. And where was the mistake? According to NUK, the book was catalogued under the wrong year in the 200 years old record by Matija Čop, otherwise one of the more notable Slovenian patriots, and the recorded mistake was carried over into the electronic catalogue. It was a big traffic jam. Only German tanks and trucks were allowed to move through it. A group of Chet-niks appeared on the road one day. Chetniks were Serbia’s national fighters against the Germans and the Partisans. They told the German officers to let the civilians go through. The officers gave the Chetniks some trouble. A Chetnik officer ordered his men to fire, and two German officers were killed. After this, things started to move. By the side of the road, there were thousands of land mines, so we had to be careful to stay on the road. We reached the Ljubel tunnel, and it was pitch black going through it. The electricity was out so we had to hold on to our cow’s tail to lead us. The tunnel was unfinished, the floor was rough, with big rocks in it. Water was dripping from the ceiling. Here and there, a man would light his lighter for us to see. When we came through, it was morning, and the sun was shining. On the other side of the tunnel, we entered into Austria. Mama made a breakfast of plain com meal. My father’s cousin, Louis Purkart, and a good friend, Jakob Straziscar, joined us for breakfast. We were all very hungry; we hadn’t eaten in two days. We walked all day long. In the afternoon, we reached Vetrinje. There were English guards there, and the road was full of all kinds of guns left by the Domobranci. Their guns could not be brought into English territory. We went over a bridge and we were in the English zone. We continued for another 20 kilometers. It was getting dark by the time we reached a huge, empty field where over 20,000 people were gathered. We sat down on the grass and I immediately fell asleep. This was early in May, and there was still snow on the high mountains. It started to rain again, and we took shelter under a tree. Drops of water fell through the leaves of the tree, right onto my neck. I was cold and hungry. In this field, two things happened. One was a miracle, the other was genocide. There were 20,000 people gathered together, with no food. Not far from where we were, we realized that hundreds and hundreds of horses and mules had been left by-German soldiers. We were animals for more than a month. We were also lucky to have milk because we had our family cow with us. One of my jobs was to ride a horse around and gather sticks and branches for the shelter. The shelter was five feet by five feet and housed four people. We did not know how long we would stay here, but after about a month, we were betrayed by imperial England. The British soldiers turned out to be part of the big lie. There were 12,000 Domobranci soldiers altogether in the field. The English High Command told the Domobranci they were going to send them to Italy. They were told they would be given new equipment, uniforms, and guns to fight the communists once again. The Domobranci were all happy to hear this. I remember when the first transport left. One more left on the second day and another on the third day. Some men escaped and returned to the camp to tell us what was happening. The English were returning the Domobranci to Yugoslavia/-Slovenia, not sending them to Italy. A cry went up in the camp. The remaining guards said they would also go wherever their brothers went. So, the last transport went out, followed by British tanks. All the Domobranci were executed by Partisans, 12,000 unarmed men and some women. John Corsellis writes about this betrayal in Slovenia 1945: Memories of Death and Survival After World War II. In 1945, John Corsellis was part of the British command that was responsible for the refugees in Vitring, Karten, Austria. He was witness to this slaying of Slovenian people by the Partisans. This event bothered him for a long time before he decided to write the book to further explain what happened there. The civilians were next to be shipped back to Yugoslavia. I saw a bulldozer digging a huge hole, and I knew it was for us. It was for people dying of starvation, and for those who might oppose the English Dr. Meršol, who was with us in the field, was educated in America. He went to the British High Command to alert the commanding officers that most of the civilians would also be killed if they were sent back. He convinced a Canadian major, Berry, that all the soldiers sent back had already been killed. Meršol * srid Berry then persuaded the Field Marshall, Montgomery, to stop the transport of civilians. the 20,000 who had been in the field, were moved to three different refugee camps. We were put into freight rail cars like cattle. Our first reaction was to try and jump out of the cars because the doors were not yet shut. We were afraid because we did not know where we were being taken or what would happen to us. We knew that if the rail car steered to the right we would go to Spital, Austria, and if it went to the left we would be going to Yugoslavia. We were all afraid to go back to Yugoslavia because we would be jailed, or worse. A man in our car had an ax and he said he was going to use it to escape if we went to the left. Instead, we moved to a camp in Spital. When we first arrived, this camp was full of young German boys, called Hitler Youth. These were boys whose parents had been killed or whose fathers were Nazi soldiers. They were being groomed to become Nazi soldiers themselves. My friend, John Buh, started to fight with one of them right away. The German boy punched him in the jaw, and John bit off part of his own tongue. In one week, the boys were all gone, and we were left in the camp. I would spend the next five years of my life in this camp. Cimperman Saluted Speech given by Fr. Joseph Boznar at end of Mass on Sunday, June 24, 2007 on the occasion of the 90th birthday for Fr. Vic Cimperman. Ribbon cutting occurred after this speech on the new railing in the sanctuary. Dear Father Cimperman. In the name of St. Vitus parishioners, your numerous family and of many friends here in church, and those unable to be with us, I want to wish you a ver^, very happy 90th birthday which was yesterday, on June 23 and which we are remembering this morning. We are so happy that you made it strong and healthy as you stand before us today. Happy Birthday, Father Vic! I want to tell you on this occasion how very dear you are to us all, not because of your age but because of the kindly and good person and a priest that you are. When I think of you I remember the gospel parable of the talents which Jesus on one occasion told the people. It matters little whether the Lord gave you 10, or five, or one talent to work with in life. What really matters is that you accepted the blessings God has given you, have multiplied them many times, and generously shared them with all you have met during your life. For this reason you are a beloved brother, an uncle and a grand-uncle and father uncle to many in your family. You are a friend and a confident to St. Vitus parishioners and the Lord’s dispenser of God’s graces, especially in doing the Holy Eucharist, of absolving sins, and consoling the sick and lonely. You are also a friend and a priestly example to me personally and other brother priests. We respect and love you very much and pray to the Lord to keep you in our midst for many years to come. After all, your 10(fh birthday is a mere 10years away. God bless you, Father Vic! There were 103,000 U.S. flags flown over the U.S. Capitol last year at the request of House and Senate members. On July 4lh more than 900 flags were flown. ‘America’ name came from Hungarian Saint The name “America” comes from a Hungarian saint. Little is known of St. Emeric, but he was the son of Hungary’s first Christian king, St. Stephen. The Italian version of Emerica is Amerigo, the first name of the Florentine navigator, Vespucci (1451-1512), vyhose accounts of voyages to the New World so impressed a German map-maker, Martin Waldseemuller, that in 1507 he gave the name America to the lands newly discovered by the Europeans. —St. Mary’s Church Bulletin What Really Happened on Independence Day, July 4th Independence Day, or the Fourth of July is the adoption by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776 of the Declaration of Independence, proclaiming the severance of the allegiance of the American colonies to Great Britain. It is the greatest secular holiday of the United States, observed in all the states, territories and dependencies. Although it is assumed the Continental Congress unanimously signed the document on the 4th of July, in fact not all delegates were present and there were no signers at all. Here is what really happened. The congressional delegate from Virginia, Richard Henry Lee, introduced in the Continental Congress, on June 7, 1776, a resolution “that... body declare the United Colonies free and independent States, absolved from allegiance to or dependence on the Crown or Parliament of Great Britain...” On June 10 a committee of five, headed by Thomas Jefferson (the actual writer), was appointed to prepare a declaration suitable to the occasion in the event that the Virginia resolution was adopted. Jefferson’s version was revised by Benjamin Franklin and John Adams before it went to the Congress where they did some editing of their own. Congress approved the resolution on July 2, the declaration composed by Jefferson and amended by his committee was adopted on July 4. That evening John Hancock ordered Philadelphia printer John Dunlap to print 200 broadside copies of the agreed upon Declaration that was signed by him as President and Charles Thomson as Secretary. These were distributed to members of the Congress and distributed to the 13 colonies and elsewhere. The Declaration was read in the yard of the state house on July 8. New York did not even vote on it until July 9. The signing was even more gradual, and it is somewhat misleading to speak of the “fifty-six original signers of the Declaration ofIndependence.” By August 6, most of those whose names are on the document had signed, but at least six signatures were attached later. One signer, Thomas McKean did not attach his name until 1781. Some of those who signed were not even in Congress when the Declaration was adopted, and some who voted for it in Congress never did get around to signing it. Robert R. Livingston was one of the committee of five; he helped to frame it; he voted for it; but he never signed it. The first anniversary of the declaration was observed only in Philadelphia with the adjournment ^of Congress, a ceremonial dinner, bonfires, the ringing of bells and fireworks. In 1788 after the requisite number of states had adopted the constitution, Philadelphia celebrated July 4 by elaborate festivities, including a grand parade. Boston, Mass., first observed the day in 1783, and thereafter this celebration replaced that of the Boston Massacre, March 5. The custom spread to other cities and states, where the day was marked by parades, patriotic oratory, picnics, patriotic programs and pageants, and community fireworks of pyrotechnic expertise characteristic of the 4th of July. He who is of the opinion money will do everything, may well be suspected of doing everything for money. -Benjamin Franklin TEACHER: George Washington not only chopped down his father’s cherry tree, but also admitted it. KENNY: Because George still had the ax in his hand. ____________________________ —Phil Hrvatin Church Humor There is the story of a pastor who announced one Sunday morning to his congregation. “I have good news and bad news. Ene so pobili, druge pozaprli, tretje do kosti prestrašili. Sama živim v kraški vasi in z žalostjo ugotavljam, kako Kras iz leta v leto bolj izgublja svojo podobo in hkrati izumira. Vstop in parkiranje— prosto. Neveste in ženini so vsako leto starejši. Do poroke pride, če sploh pride, vedno kasneje. Lep pozdrav in vse dobro Vam in vsem sodelujočim želi Lojze Letonja. Tudi g. Anton Ovtar se prisrčno zahvali in vse lepo pozdravi!” Tako vesela novica, da so prejeli prvo sv. obhajilo, kar bo misijonar še večkrat skušal priti v njihovo mesto, da bo daroval sv. mašo in delil sv. obhajilo vernemu ljudstvu. Kako malo mislimo na naše milosti, ko to lahko vsako jutro prejmemo sv. obhajilo in prisostvujemo sv. maši. Hvala Ti, Jezus! Seveda to povzroča razne težave, posebej ker v obmejnih krajih s Hrvaško nimajo dovolj stanovanj za policiste, carinike in drugo osebje obmejnih «lužb. Naj . .ne bo razočaran ob šlabi udeležbi. Pridite in pomagajte!
