Jezus imenuje svoje ucence z bese-do »prijatelji«. - (Prim. Oznanjevalec 2005-2006, št. 3) 170 | VESTNIK 2021 172 | VESTNIK 2021 174 | VESTNIK 2021 176 | VESTNIK 2021 Illustration On this day last year a two-minute silence was held at a hospital in Northampton, England, to hon-our a frontline NHS nurse who died after contracting coronavirus. Father-of-four Augustine Agyei-Mensah – known as Gus – was a highly regarded learning disabilities nurse. Gus had been working with patients at the trust for six years. He collaborat-ed closely with teams in speech and language thera-py and psychology to support patients with a variety of complex cognitive and sensory needs. Originally from Ghana, Gus was proud of his heritage and ded-icated to his young family. The chief executive of the Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said Gus cared for some of the most vulnerable peo-ple in society, adding that “lives have been trans-formed because of him; he was committed to mak- ing a difference and giving people a second chance”. A co-worker described him as “a truly won-derful colleague who is so missed and shall be re-membered for his smile, his energy, and his unwa-vering care and compassion”. Gus was one of hundreds of healthcare staff and care workers in the UK who died from Covid-19 in the first few months of the pandemic. They were among thousands of the health workers around the world who died after contracting the virus. In the UK, many had come from other countries to work for the National Health Service. Most were working on the front line and caring for patients; some were retired but continued to work. They were heart sur-geons, eye doctors, nurses, midwives, plastic sur-geons, porters, paramedics, pharmacists, care home staff, patient transport staff, hospital security staff. And they were loved members of their families and community of friends. Gospel Teaching The laying down of life for love is the theme of today’s Gospel. In these final weeks of Eastertide we listen once again to the words of Jesus at the Last Supper. Jesus offers himself as the model of love, willing to go so far as to suffer danger and death to express love. The second reading today explains this more fully. John is writing to the early Christian community and tells them, “My dear people, let us love one another since love comes from God.” And in the first reading we learn that God loves every-body. Peter has been hesitant to go into the home of Cornelius, because he is a Roman soldier, outside the Jewish faith community. But when he does, then suddenly the Holy Spirit is poured forth upon that home. The people receive the Spirit just as the first disciples did after Jesus rose from the dead. Peter says, “they have received the Holy Spirit just as much as we have”. Loving as Jesus loved will require sacrifice. Love is not just a sentimental, warm, fuzzy feeling: it’s a conscious decision to share ourselves with oth-ers, to give of ourselves for the sake of another. Application Probably, most of us are not going to be chal-lenged to lay down our lives for another, but none of us knows what lies ahead. From the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, doctors, nurses and healthcare workers risked their lives working on the front line treating patients with Covid-19. In the UK, and in other countries, people showed their appre-ciation with public displays of support for healthcare workers. Tens of thousands of volunteers flocked to join community support groups, picking up shop-ping and delivering medicine to the most vulnera-ble people. Volunteers from four central London parishes brought food and water into Trafalgar Square each day to give out to homeless people, working alongside the Sikh community. There was an outpouring of solidarity and neighbourliness in many areas. As followers of Christ today, we are called to love ourselves and others outside our own circle. Following his own example, Jesus taught us to reach out to those who are poor, excluded and marginal-ised. Let us carry on breaking barriers to reach out to others. Jesus teaches us not just to love to those who love us, but to love our enemies too. It takes great courage and conviction to understand that we must love one another as Jesus loves us. And there is a further dimension. Pope Francis taught us in his encyclical Laudato Si’ – issued six years ago this month – to hear “the cry of the poor and the cry of the earth”. We are called to care for the whole earth community, described by Pope Francis as “our com-mon home”. All things and all people are connected and united in God’s love. 6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER Response: The Lord has revealed his victory in the sight of the nations. First Reading Acts 10:25-26. 34-35. 44-48 Christ has revealed that God’s love extends to everybody. Second Reading 1 John 4:7-10 John insists that the more fully and com-pletely we know God, the more the reality of God’s love dawns on us. We are called to love one another as God has loved us. Gospel John 15:9-17 Jesus spends his last hours with his closest companions, speaking of love – abiding in love, living each day with joy, and bearing the fruits of that love and joy. “Love one another, as I have loved you.” DIOCESE OF HAMILTON - ŠKOFIJA HAMILTON PARENTING TIP OF THE MONTH Parenting Tip 130: COVID-19 continues to dominate and control much of our lives. All of this affects children, but since they take their cues from adults in their lives, we can help them to feel resilient. Remind them of how happy you are, despite all that is happening that you are together as a family. Remind them of the beauty of nature that is all around for them to see and enjoy, that technology lets them connect with other family and friends and that through all of this we can continue to pray and ask for God’s blessings. When they hear anger and frustration, they feel worry and concern; when they hear opti-mism and calm, they too feel those emotions as well. Let us remind our children how much we love them; help keep them strong during the pandemic. From: Family Ministry Office. MARRIAGE TIP OF THE MONTH Marriage Tip 110: Listening may be the most important aspect of any relationship, but it is also the hardest part for us to get right! Listening requires our full attention, not just to the words spoken, but also to the emo-tions attached. Doing so allows us to under-stand how our spouse is feeling and, if we lis-ten attentively, to repeat back what we are hearing. When we do this without first making a defensive reply, issues get resolved and our spouse feels supported. Then we can reverse roles, expressing our thoughts and feelings on the issue, as our spouse becomes the listener. Happy couples work on these skills until they become second nature, thus keeping their relationship bond strong. From: Family Minis-try Office. SUNDAY, MARCH 9TH IS MOTHER’S DAY! “The joy of love experienced by families is also the joy of the Church.” The opening line of Pope Francis’ Apostolic Exhortation, Amoris Laetitia, reminds us why the Church offers blessings and gratitude to mothers on Moth-er’s Day. A mother’s love is the first human experience we encounter. Mothers nurture us, teach us how to live and act in the world, and reflect God’s unconditional love for us. “A mother who watches over her child with ten-derness and compassion helps him or her to grow in confidence and to experience that the world is a good and welcoming place. This helps the child to grow in self-esteem and, in turn, to develop a capacity for intimacy and empathy” (Amoris Laetitia, 175). May God bless all mothers, grandmothers, and mother figures! Thank you for your love and affection in our world! Our Lady of the Annunciation, pray for us! - Ex corde, +Douglas, OMI POKOJNI - FUNERAL V soboto, 8. maja 2021 je Bog, po daljši bo-lezni, poklical k sebi našega farana Ivana Petek. Pogreb pokojnega bo v torek. Zaradi omejitev Covida-19 bo v ožjem družinskem krogu. Po-kojnega Ivana bomo položili k vecnemu pocit-ku na Our Lady of the Angels pokopališcu. Iskreno sožalje družini ob izgubi moža in oce-ta. Pokojnemu pa vecni mir in pokoj. MOTHER'S DAY - MATERINSKI DAN Tudi letos smo ostali brez pravega skupne-ga praznovanja materinskega dne. Priporocimo matere nebe-ški Materi Mariji, saj smo v mesecu majniku. The Bible consistently asks to honor and love their mothers. Examples of this can be seen in Exodus 20:12, “Honor your father and your mother,” and Leviticus 19:3, “Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father.” HOW MOTHER'S DAY CAME INTO EXISTENCE Mother's Day was an eternal tribute to An-na Jarvis' mother after her death in 1905. On the second death anniversary of her mother, Anna Jarvis bought 500 white carnations for a memorial service she organised in her West Virginia hometown. She campaigned to make Mother's Day a recognised holiday in the Unit-ed States after her mother Ann Reeves Jarvis, a peace activist, died in 1905. Ann Jarvis cared for wounded soldiers on both sides of the American Civil War, and created Mother's Day Work Clubs to address people's health issues. To honor her mother by continuing the work she started, she campaigned to set aside a day to honor all the mothers as she believed a mother is "the person who has done more for you than anyone in the world". Former US President Woodrow Wilson in 1914 signed a proclamation and designated Mother's Day, held on the second Sunday in May, as a national holiday to honour mothers. This is how Mother's Day came into existence. Many, however, started to feel that this day has become commercialized, including the Mother's Day founder Anna Jarvis. Božji blagoslov in priprošnja nebeške Matere Marije, naj spremlja vse matere ob praznovanju materinskega dneva! Hvala Olgi Glavac za lepo okrasitev cerkve. Happy Mother’s Day!
